Q: iPhoto Yosemite duplicates Photos while importing from iPhone

Hi guys,

I have one open issue, with iPhone after Yosemite upgrade: if I connect my iPhone 5s and import pictures, I find a new event but all the imported photos are duplicated.

It's very annoying because I have to remove them manually and I wonder why it happens.

Before Yosemite, everything was working fine.

Thanks for support.

My iPhone release is 9.6 (build 910.29)

Kind Regards,

francesco

iPhoto imports what you give it to import - it does not ever duplicate anything - most probably cause is that you have duplicate photos on your phone (shooting HDR and keeping both for example) or that you are imng twice - once via PhotoStream and a second time via USB

Check the iPhone's Photos & Camera settings to see if it's set to keep the normal photo when taking HDR photos:

Yes, HDR is a very like source for duplicate photos. In that case  I'd keep the normal photos. I noticed, that frequently my HDR photos are blurred by motion blur and the normal photos much better. It happens, when the subject moved a little bit and the motion stabilizer could not cope. But this is not visible on the iPhone display and can only be checked after downloading to a device with a larger display.

    Hi guys,

Unfortunately the answer is "not" to both your suggestions.

    - HDR: yes, I keep original photos as I was keeping it before Yosemite update. So HDR photos were two, the original and the HDR one.

Now even the simple photo (= no HDR, btw the majority in my camera roll...) is duplicated when imported in iPhoto.

    - PhotoStream and a second time via USB: what do you mean?

I have photostream disabled (I don't want photo sync in the cloud).

What I do is very simply and it's exactly the same to what I was doing some weeks ago before Yosemite:

    - shoot photo on iPhone, without or with HDR;

    - plug iPhone to iMac and import photo to iPhone

    - now, with Yosemite, all no-HDR photos are duplicated (if I export them, the file name is IMGxxxxx_2.jpg)

I have just disabled the auto-opening of iPhone while connecting iPhone to iMac (iPhoto was already disabled, I have disabled now even Image Capture).

    Thanks in advance.

Have you perhaps taken burst photos? And the option "Upload Burst photos" enabled?

    Hi,

I have the same issue since Yosemite.

My photo streem is turned off, so burst photos are also disabled.

I  checked in image capture, and the photos are also duplicate there.

    What could be the solution?

Same problem here - since about a week ago (right around the time I upgraded to Yosemite) - I plug in my iPhone 5s, tell iPhoto to import the photos, and it imports the same photo twice, and re-names the second one IMGxxxx_2.jpg. I haven't changed any settings on my MacBook Pro or my iPhone (that I'm aware of) - so this seems to be a bug that needs to be worked out.  Kind of annoying though... but glad it's not just me.

Just did a test... took 1 picture on iPhone and went to iPhoto to import it. It is only showing 1 new picture to import - but yet after the import is complete, two pictures show up. Went to settings on the iPhone, photos, checked the "My Photo Stream" and "iCloud Photo Sharing" - and exited, then changed my mind and went back in and changed them back to original. With the iPhone connected to the Mac, I took a random pic and within a few seconds it appeared in iPhoto without me doing anything. But the blue button was highlighted to "Import 1 Photo" - so I clicked it, and then it showed me that one like it had already been imported, and do I want to import duplicates? I said "no" and also checked "apply to all duplicates" - and now the problem seems to be solved. So if you can get to the settings in iPhoto that asks about importing duplicates you can just change it there, but I don't know how to tell you to get there. Hope my dumb luck helps you too.

    Hi all,

How is possible that noone at Apple is able to solve this annoying and hateful issue?!?!

I have just bought an iPhone 6, DEACTIVATED ANY iCloud backup and sharing, making photos and...I connect to iPhoto and find ALL DUPLICATES, both photos and video.

IT'S UNACCEPTABLE!!! I am becoming furious about that.

I need an answer and a fix ASAP

Some users have reported that updating their Phone to iOS 8.1.2 and Yosemite to the latest available fixed the problem for them.  Have you updated to the latest system versions on all of your devices?

Try downloading your photos to a folder on the Desktop with Image Capture.  Do you get duplicates in the folder?

If not then as a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import the photos from your iPhone and check to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

You have resorted the problem to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html, right?

You sure know how to torpedo a brilliant theory.   It's strange that I have an iPhone 5s, on iOS  8.1.2 and an iMac on Yosemite and don't have the double photos problem.

Try this: doot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, connect your iPhone and try importing again.  Do you still get the doubles?  What Safe Mode does is disable all 3rd party add ons and unnecessary system components.  If you  don't get the double photos then it's something what was disabled.

Again be sure to report you problem to Apple so the squeaky wheel will get noticed.

The same here, old Toad.  Yosemite on all Macs, and iOS 8.1.2 on all mobile devices.

I did not see a single duplicated photo once, when downloading.  I cant reproduce the issue.  My settings are: Photo Stream enabled, iCloud Drive enabled, iCloud Photo Library (Beta) enabled.
