It sounds like you are connecting your phone to the iTunes library on the computer but the application is becoming unresponsive. I recommend the troubleshooting in the following article to help you get this resolved:
iTunes: May become unresponsive when connecting iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,

Thank you for your reply and advice. Went through all those steps and problem still not solved.
Here's what I did discover however:
- The problem does not happen on a new user
- The problem does not happen on a different computer
I went through and followed the suggestions for rebuilding library, deleting cache files, etc, but nothing would get the devices to connect to iTunes under my main user account...
So frustrating.
Any further advice would be appreciated

Jan 24, 2015 8:08 PM in response to Scott_Renby Richard Szabo,I was able to fix a problem where iTunes 12.01 on Mac OS X would not recognize my iPhone or iPad but the device WAS recognized in iPhoto.
Another website gave me the hint to download and re-install iTunes. (I also then restarted both the Mac and iPhone and iPad afterward for good measure).
Here is the URL for download:
