Is your TV HDCP compliant?

Make sure HDMI cable is secure. Try a different cable and port. Reboot.

I Had the same issue. It was resolve when i change my HDMI cable with the gold tip.

I cannot describe how frustrated and angry I am about this. I have a digital projector, and have tried multiple cables, from both my MacBook Pro and an AppleTV, to the projector...it will occasionally play for a few seconds and then quit, but more often than not it just throws up the HDCP error.

HDCP is a protocol put in place by the studios. If it is also occurring from the MBP then that would indicate that the projector is not compliant.

Hey, literally, overnight my Apple TV went from working fine to getting this error.  No updates, no changes in software, watching a movie that I already purchased and watched previously.  Now I get the error.   Are you still thinking its cable quality?

You would need to try another cable in order to rule that out as an issue. Also try different port and if possible test another TV

Hey.. so I did try another cable.. another port and I don't really have a second home theater to try.

The cable that I have is a Monster Gold, so I seriously doubt that I experienced instant cable failure.  After re-hooking it back up (still getting the error), I seriously researched the problem.  HCDP is a hardware protocol between the devices similar to TCP/IP.  The solution here is to get the Devices to Reset.  Here is the process that I followed to reset:

1. Unplug the HDMI Cables. First tv then apple tv

2. Unplug the TV power and the AppleTV power, let them sit 30-60 seconds,

3. Plug in HDMI cables while power is off

4. plug the tv power in first, then the ATV power.

Viola!  No more problem.   Vaz...  have you encountered this solution before?

I've got a similar problem and tried the solution you have posted.  Still nothing....!  The entire message I get is "NO HDCP.  HDCP isn't supported by your HDMI connection.  This rental requires HDCP for playback.  You will need to use component video connection to watch this rental"

Then I get the option to continue.

HDMI cables have been changed and I cannot get this to work.  It used to work, but all of a sudden stopped.  The TV is a Samsung Plasma, which is a few years old, so perhaps that is out dated now?

I still cannot find a solution to this problem.

Go to eBay or Amazon, look for a "ViewHD HDMI Splitter v1.3b" and buy one. Put it between your Apple device and whatever display you want to use. The splitter speaks HDCP to your Apple device, and supports non-HDCP displays.

That would mean it's bypassing DRM, discussion of such is not permitted here and isn't exactly legal.

Hey, it's Christmas. I guess you're giving everyone new HDCP-compliant displays this year? The splitter doesn't bypass DRM, it fully supports HDCP on all three of its ports.
