Q: Lag in Typing in Yosemite's Mail w/ External Apple Keyboard

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have been having a very annoying problem with delayed typing response in Mail when I have my external USB Apple keyboard (current model with numeric pad).  It is a sporadic issue.  Typing will be responsive, then there are 2-4 second delays in response.  I have only witnessed the issue with Mail and when using the external keyboard.  Problem does not occur in other programs or when using my MacBook Pro's built in keyboard.  Nor did the problem exist prior to upgrading to Yosemite.

My equipment is a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina.  When on my desk, I have it connected to a 23" Apple Display (original LCD), USB Apple Keyboard, Logitech cordless Trackman, and a Drobo firewire external drive.

Has anyone else witnessed this issue?  Or have an suggestions on correcting?

Thank you in advance!

Thank you for the suggestions!  I have also tried Font Book (NOTE: I continuously run Suitcase Fusion to manage my fonts) and switched from Helvetica Neue, but never solve the issue for me.

What still gets me is that I do not have the issue when I use my MacBook Pro with the built in keyboard & display (and nothing attached).   Only happens when I plug in my external keyboard (USB), Logitech trackman, Drobo drive and Apple display.......

    Kirk,

I am running, in common with your list of utilities, Clam XAv, Dropbox, and 1Password 5.

I have the lagging-typing behaviour, in Mac Mail only.

Anyone else? Is it a conflict with one of these three utilities?

For me the change of the font does not work either, unfortunately. Also, I experience the lag from the very beginning of an email message. Maybe every 1 out of 7 emails experience this issue.

I too continue to experience the text entry delay in Apple Mail after changing the default font. Interestingly the new message I created immediately after changing the font performed perfectly (no text delay, but subsequent messages (and replies) still have the delay.

Today I disabled the live scanning "Sentry" feature of ClamXav to see if it might be causing the text issue. No luck there either.

Has anyone tried quitting Dropbox (temporarily) to see if it changes Mail's behavior? I also wonder if anyone with newer hardware might be able to spend some time in Mail while in Safe boot mode (hold down Shift at startup) and see if the text entry delay happens without any third party apps/extensions?

I tried the SAFE BOOT option but it didn't make any difference. The lag seems to get worse the longer the email. I am going to try deleting DropBox and see what happens

OK, good data point to know it happens in Safe boot with only-Apple software and when no third party software is enabled. Seems pretty clear it's a point zero Yosemite bug. It's a bit funny we're not hearing more screams from other users. Are we just fast typists?

One thing I've found which seems to help is to save the message you're working on. The delay seems to go away temporarily.

I just quit Dropbox (I don't think you'd need to delete it entirely) and will report back if it makes any difference.

Anyone seeing anything else which seems to help alleviate the issue?

    Thanks all,

Quitting DROPBOX makes no difference. Seems it is a software issue and by the deadly silence from Apple, I guess they know and are trying to fix....... really hangs the longer the email message and yes it does improve slightly if you close/save the message and start again.

Where are you expecting to hear from Apple? It certainly won't be here.  Have you reported it and are awaiting a response?  If not, the earliest you might read something from Apple would be when OS X 10.10.1 comes out.

I just submitted the following "feedback" at Apple's site here: https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html  I recommend other do the same.

    Here's my feedback:

"A growing group of users are experiencing intermittent typing/text entry delays in Apple Mail under Yosemite 10.10.

While writing a message, text entry will delay for 2-5 seconds. Saving the message seems to help for a short time. This issue happens when booted in SAFE mode, so it seem to be an Apple-only issue and not related to third party software. It appears to occur across a range of Apple desktop and laptop hardware of various vintages.

I have re-installed 10.10 (using the Recovery partition) and reset PRAM and SMC on my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro, but the issue still persists.

    Apple Discussions thread is here:

    Thank you for listening!"

As a further test, I tried disabling AppNap system wide (with a Terminal command), in case the text entry delay was related to a bug in Mail.

It isn't. Disabling AppNap makes no difference.

Try going in to preferences->Viewing and turn off "Highlight messages with color when not grouped". I was having the problem and after I turned that off things seem to be fully fixed. It has only been five minutes so maybe it is something else or I'm going to get the problem again but so far so good.

I'm not finding disabling "Highlight messages with color..." option (as suggested above) to help on my machine, even after quitting/relaunching Mail as well as restarting. Anyone else?

And I'm curious what observation led to disabling that feature in relation to the text/typing delay?

Makes no difference on mine either. This really is frustrating now and I have had to resort to typing mails in WORD and then pasting.
