Q: iOS 8.1: creating new mail asks for icloud password

On my iPhone I have set up an iCloud account for contacts, calender and all the icloud goodies and my old google account for mail. There is no mail address assigned in the icloud account.

Since the update to iOS 8.1 I get polled for the icloud password when

- trying to write a new mail. I can cancel the password request and writing and sending mail works nevertheless

- activating airdrop for contacts only. Regardless of entering the password or not airdrop does not get activated.

It was working in iOS 8.0.2 (at least the mail part). Any idea what causes the password requests?

I Tried all the steps that have been explained here in this forum even tried removing iCloud account rebooting Rhiannon and now I get prompts on mail I drop and just about anything that requires me to use my cloud account

none one of the steps work. You end up having to put your password again.

THere was was a thread that said to backup using iTunes and restore. That didn't work stayed up till 3am and that didn't solve this.

LOoks ops like a total start over is the only solution and this is unacceptable.

THis his seams like it was introduced in 8.1 but I can't go back that far doesn't seam to matter what backup I use to restore to 8.1 or 8.1.1 it still promoting for your password when restore.

    APPLE please fix this.

ITs it's either one of two things.

    1. Restore hasn't finished

    2. Backup got corrupted

    3. Or something introduced in 8.1

I would recommend to everyone experiencing this issue to please contact Apple support:  https://www.apple.com/support/

The more they're aware of this issue the more likely it is that we'll see a fix sooner rather than later.  I have a case in with Apple about this but they may possibly need more data (examples of the bug) from other customers or it may not be their highest priority.  By letting Apple know directly about your issue you can help everyone else who is having this issue.

    Hey phemmer,

Any chance you used a capital letter when you entered your iCloud username on the iPhone? I did and it seems that what was causing the problem.

    Try this:

    1. Log out of iCloud on your iPhone

    2. Restart the phone

    3. Log back into iCloud using all lowercase letters

I can't seem to force the password popup to reappear now and I've even enabled Airplane mode first as that is usually a way to force it to happen.

Let me know if it solves it for you please.

    Scoobs,

Yeah, I do typically log in with it upper-cased... I guess I don't know why but technically it should work:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_address#Syntax

I'll try your suggestion out tonight and reply with my findings.  Unfortunately I've had no updates from Apple on my case, it's still with the engineering group.

    Hi Paul,

As you also used capital letters in your username (as I had), then hopefully this should work for you too.

I've still not seen the problem again after five hours, and I've heard from 6 or 7 others on the forums that also say it fixed their issue.

I understand why you mention the fact that email addresses should be case insensitive, however your AppleID is just a regular username and it just so happens that we both use email addresses for our AppleID. Lots of people don't. In the old days you just picked whatever you wanted as your AppleID.

ALso, this is definitely a new bug in ios 8.1 that I would expect apple to fix in a later release. I've been using capital letters when entering my AppleID since the start of iCloud and this is the first time I've had a problem

I Cannot believe that after all of this aggravation trying everything your suggestion re: capital letter has actually worked!  Thank you for this as I am no longer being asked for my iCloud ID.

    Hi MaryGraceA,

I know what you mean. I've tried so many drastic things, it's unbelievable that the fix is so simple.

Glad lad it worked for you too.

I just want to clarify, as some people are confused by the fix I posted earlier.

You must enter your iCloud password as normal, with capital lettees etc if you have them in your password. However, when entering your AppleID Username you should use all lowercase letters.

Scoobs - this fix is brilliant.  It hadn't occurred to me that's the issue would be using capitals in my email address would be the issue.  I always type my email as I would write my name with a capital at the beginning of my firstname and last name.  I have just tried all lower case and so far it works.

You're wonderful Scoobs.  Every time my wife sent an AOL email from her phone, she'd have to enter her iCloud password.  That was weird.  But signing out of iCloud, and signing back in with all lowercase username fixed the problem. This bug was NOT fixed in 8.1.1.  After updating, she did your lowercase trick and then she was ok.
