Jan 10, 2014 4:59 AM in response to aruder14by itsallbroken,Not sure if this helps but i solved my issues although i'm not sure why this has worked!
All i have done is move my itunes library from the sd card it was originally stored on to a NAS drive and i'm running it from the NAS now, all the music i have played since doing this has played flawlessly!
I'm really not sure why running it off the sd card was such an issue as it was fine before upgrading the OS?

Jan 12, 2014 6:22 AM in response to aruder14by RalphBee,Actually the problem is much worse than I originally thought! Not only does itunes start and stop my purchased items it also does the same with cd's that I are in the disc slot - for no good reason.
This really is unacceptable!
For those of us who have purchased thousands of pounds, dollars or rubles of music and now to find that we aren't actually able to listen to it without interruption suggest the potential for a refund.
Come on apple - what do you say?

Feb 24, 2014 3:19 AM in response to aruder14by gary.liddle,Same here, 10.9.1 / itunes11.1.4 music stops for up to 10 seconds plays for a bit then stops then starts....
My machine has no excessive cpu or disk load and nothing reported in system.log.
That I can't listen to my purchased music without it frustratlingly coming and going is pretty crappy.
Has anyone noticed if the effect occurs close after a reboot or if only after the machine has been up a while?

Mar 5, 2014 1:16 PM in response to aruder14by chienpo,OS Version: 10.9.1 (13B42)
Hardware: MacBook Pro Retina, 15-inch Early 2013 (2.4GHz Intel Core i7; 16 GB Memory)
iTunes Version: 11.1.5 (5)
Hard Drive: Full Drive Encryption
...however, lest anyone think the drive encryption is the issue...
I can reproduce the problem when playing music directly off of my iPod while it's connected to my mac. Also, it seems to happen more frequently when I'm running a VMWare virtual machine at the same time or when I do something that may be performing more I/O. I didn't have this problem on this same computer/setup/scenario, however, prior to the latest iTunes update. Makes me wonder if they've introduced some resource inefficient code somewhere?

Mar 5, 2014 1:36 PM in response to chienpoby beatmolecular,I had this problem a few months ago with a MacBook Pro (Late 2012) , I tried everything , hardware tests , erase the disk .
In the genius bar did not know what the problem was after several visits to the genius bar , I told them I could not continue going and that only erased and returned me .
Then to have taken her many times to repair , I had my data on an external hard drive, load the iTunes library from an external hard drive and never paused .
( To load the iTunes library from a different disk to the original , press " option key " to start iTunes, and you will leave the file chooser , iTunes Library.itl selected from the eternal hard drive).
So l told them that had occurred with the hard drive although their hardware tests did not detect the error , it was clear that the hard drive was what was causing it .
In your case to have a MacBook Pro Retina, the problem must be with the SSD , changing the hard drive in my case everything was solved , and they offered me apologize for not having realized before that there was error, since their hardware tests do not detect the error.
Greetings and I hope will be useful .
( Sorry my English is a bit bad).

Mar 6, 2014 10:52 AM in response to beatmolecularby chienpo,Locating my iTunes library on another drive wouldn't likely work. As I mentioned in my post, I can reproduce the problem by playing music _directly_ off my iPod:
1. Connect iPod to my Mac
2. Click on "iPod" button in top right of iTunes window
3. Click "On This iPod" button/tab
4. Select a song in the list and start playing music
In this scenario, it doesn't matter where my iTunes library is because it isn't playing music off of it. I can connect a friends iPod that has song that aren't even in my library. The problem is still there. My hard drive isn't even involved, the the iPod, the USB cable and port and the underlying communications bus, my CPU and system memory.

Apr 12, 2014 10:04 AM in response to aruder14by CRoss,OSX 10.9.2
iTunes : 11.1.5 (5)
Setup: iTunes playing via Airplay (Ethernet)
Slowly narrowing down the trigger event - appears to be related to the screen saver kicking in.

Jul 10, 2014 8:56 PM in response to aruder14by SamGreylands,I'm having this problem as well but not all the time. I'm running 10.6.8 Imac. Itunes 11.2.2. 3.0 GHz Intel Core i3. RAM 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3.
I'm upgrading to Mavericks now. I hope it doesn't get worse.
I've also been having problem with Iphoto freezing, being really slow and crashing. I Don't know if it's related.
I was told once by a Mac Tech when my speakers on my Powerbook stopped working that it was because of the headphone port getting damaged and the computer thinking that there was still something connected. Although the laptop sound worked fine with headphones plugged in.
He told me it was pretty common and that it wasn't worth fixing. I wonder if this is related.
I will plug my headphones in next time it happens and hear if it makes a difference.
I will let you know.
Why do all these problems start happening after 3 years. Hmmmmmmm?

Jul 25, 2014 7:02 AM in response to aruder14by Creative Bearings,Not sure why this works, but nobody had any other ideas in this thread, so I thought I'd chime in:
I went "get info" on iTunes (the app in the Applications Folder). Then I switched the "Open in 32-bit mode" from off to on. For fun, I also turned off "App Nap".
Without a restart of the computer, I just quit iTunes and opened it again. All of a sudden all the "beach balls" I was getting everywhere elsewhere on my computer, just stopped happening. My whole computer performs happier. My guess is that the 64bit mode uses more of the processor cores. Perhaps one of those cores on my machine is faulty, or in use by iPhoto, Mail, Networking, Finder or something else frequently.
Note:
I have still had a couple "Skips" in the playback, but nowhere near as frequent, possibly because my computer is running a lot better. At least I can get more work done. Even my graphics software opening from an external server causes no "beach balls" or lag time.
Hope this helps - Let me know.
Greg

Sep 23, 2014 12:17 PM in response to ongpokby jahjahjah,For me it was the "not completely plugged in connector" in the speaker port. When I pushed it in all the way, the sound volume increased significantly and the aberrant starting of iTunes ceased. Thanks to ongpik

Oct 4, 2014 2:22 PM in response to Creative Bearingsby Taap,Definitely doesn't work for 2013 13" retina. It just said iTunes NEEDS to be opened in 64-bit. I don't know how they censor on these forums but this is f'ing ********. How can this even be a problem with the CREATOR of iTunes? This platform is BASED off the money making iPod and connecting to your computer easily for music and sharing. Yet playback is completely flawed? Word? I spent 1.5k for some BS.

Nov 12, 2014 12:02 PM in response to aruder14by Milt Fletch,I'm having the same problem with my Mac:
15" Mac Book Pro (mid 2012)
Mountain Lion OS
8 GB RAM
iTunes started pausing while playing about 4 days ago. The pausing started slowly but became more frequent as time went on. I upgraded iTunes to the latest version 12.0.1.26 two days ago but the pausing continues. It seems that I can play CDs on the Mac Book without problems so far.
Any suggestions of how to fix this problem?
Thanks.
Milt
