Q: Yosemite [erroneously] displays multiple Shared Instances under Finder

I am having similar issues since upgrading my 2009 iMac to Yosemite.  Three other Apple laptops in the home have not been upgraded and do not have this issue.

Hmmm... I have had up to 8 erroneous iMacs in my shared folder in Finder.  Down to just two after a lot of fiddling (rebooting devices, deleting plist files, changing network settings, network names, change to static IP, etc...) - still can't get rid of all of the erroneous iMacs.  Looking back on threads, it looks like this has been a problem even before Yosemite release. 

Let's hope Apple sorts it out soon.

Yeah well mine is back too (back up to 3).  I have absolutely no desire to do any major fiddling around.  This was not an issue with Mavericks - never saw it before.  I suppose until Apple gets that update out, I will just live with it and every once in a while go back in and rename my computer in the sharing folder.  As long as it isn't interfering with anything, at this point it is just an annoyance factor.

I got rid of it by turning off remote management in sharing.

I have never had any part of Sharing enabled, and I still have this problem.

Same problems here.  Seems to me it's about time to revert to Windows

Likewise, however I've stopped using the sleep function and it's stayed at (3) since.  Apple needs to fix this asap!

Still having this issue - tried everything here as well as other suggested hacks around the web.  When can we expect this to be fixed?  Right now my Macbook is basically a brick for anything web-related, a random 8% packet loss comes with it.

I'm having problems with multiple versions of my Shared Mac appearing too. I don't have Remote Sharing enabled, have tried deleting the Finder plist etc without luck. Only had this since upgrading two machines to Yosemite. The one that works with continuity and handoff is the only one this is happening on.

I filed a bug report with Apple, and they asked me to send them some logging information; however, although my Shared section on my Finder window listed 7 occurrences of my computer, and my computer name had changed to something like "My Computer (7)" --- I couldn't get more instances to show up, and therefore my log was probably useless. 

If you all can replicate the problem (and have yet more instances show up), I would suggest you do what Apple wanted me to do and enable verbose logging while you replicate the problem, then file a bug report and send them the logs. 

To enable verbose logging (and disable syslog quota):  

sudo /usr/sbin/discoveryutil loglevel Everything

sudo syslog -c discoveryd -d

Then replicate the problem. 

Then collect the logs from the system using: 

sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/SystemConfiguration.framework/Resources/get-mobility -info

Attach the resulting mobility-info* file to a new bug at https://bugreport.apple.com 

To put your logging back to normal: 

sudo /usr/sbin/discoveryutil loglevel Basic

The more bugs they get, the higher priority; and the more useful info like this, the likelier they will be able to fix it. 

If you setup static IP, you cannot work with any free wifi (like cafe, airport etc).

I tried to uncheck the Bonjour Computer from the sidebar in the Finder preferences, and the list of "computer (xx)" disappears even if it is still present in the "network" folder. I also renamed my computer from Pluto to Plutone in the sharing option and the list of "computer (xx)" continues keeping the old name (Pluto (xx))

Actually, I think all that is necessary is to restart all of your AirPort-based devices (including Time Capsules) and Apple TVs, and then restart your router. This is what finally resolved the problem for me!
