Q: Emac video card dead. Need help please.

Hi all, my neighbor just bought a used eMac for his son (700Mhz) to replace his windows machine. They had it a couple of weeks and all of a sudden the video went dead. I suggested they take it to the local Apple store and they diagnosed it with having a dead video card, thus a logic board replacement.

Unfortunately, his serial number starts with G8224DN, so it isn't covered under the replacement program, apparently. I feel bad as I suggested they get him a cheap Mac to replace their virus laden Windows box. So much for my spiel about having Apple hardware for the last 15 years without a single failure...

Anyone from Apple want to be kind and cut the guy a break? I doubt he is going to buy more Apple gear at this point if we can't get this straightened out.

So, barring Apple from being a saint here, does anyone have a source for replacement logic boards for a reasonable price? Apple store quoted $425, and he didn't even pay that much for the computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
-Jeff

    Welcome to apple forum.

Sorry to hear your friend lost, unfortunately this is a user forum, and almost all of us is not work for apple so we might not give you that answer you need.

But for $ 425, instead of having it repaired, he can find better model on auction sites like eBay and such, he might go with same eMac but with faster processor.

But be advised it is also used apple and might have the same risk like the previous one.

    Good Luck.

Wow the user must not be too happy with Apple right now. I know I sure wouldn't be. Anyway, I would pick up another eMac or maybe an iMac G4. The original 700MHz eMac had issues with the display and video card, so I'm not surprised this happened. Your best bet would be to pick up a last gen 1.42GHz eMac on eBay. They can be found relatively cheap, and can keep up with the latest PPC Macs. I would also recommend a 1.25GHz model, but with the capacitors on these models popping (mine has never done this) I would try to stay away from these models or I would look at the serial number before purchasing. Good luck!
