iMac Computer Name on Local Network Duplicating in Yosemite

Since installing Yosemite, I've noticed that on our local network my computer keeps creating multiple computer names that both I can see and others on the network can see (see screenshot):

They are all ghosts and I can't connect to any of them. Several will disappear and reappear for no apparent reason.

This creates network problems especially for bonjour (multiple chats), etc.

Checked my Sharing Settings and this is what it says (screenshot):

Not sure how to resolve this?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

That is a known bug, fortunately it is harmless. You can report it to Apple at www.apple.com/feedback

It's not really harmless .... at times the duplication can cause an error as one moves files back and forth between two computers ... let's say when moving files from an old computer to the new Yosemite computer. Can cause terrible problems.

But I'm glad to know the issue is 'known'. Hopefully it will be solved.

Thx!

Do you have your Mac set up to get an IP from both WiFi and Ethernet?

If so, can you set up your router to establish DHCP IP reservations that are not the same IP for both interfaces. If it wakes up and sees it’s name on the network as it is getting an IP from the other interface, it will rename the computer. You may be able to prevent that by reserving specific IP addresses for each interface.

I had the same issue.

Under Finder/Devices: I saw DeskMac (16)

And then showing ALL under Shared:

From reading other posts and possible fixes, the following worked for me:

Rebooted AirPort TimeCapsule - This removed all the "Shared Devices" Duplicate Names. It Cleaned up the Folders under The DeskMac Devices. I then got rid of the '(16)' under System Preferences / Sharing - by editing the name.

Restarted the iMac - and everything seems normal now.

I will monitor the 'issue' for any re-occurence.

system stats:

iMac 27", Mid 2011

OSX Yosemite 10.10

cheers!

? Why would I create a different thread for similar symptoms when all I am doing is showing a possible solution?

Since the thread was started by 'mindthepixels', I would think that he/she 'owns' the thread and would be in the position to claim 'hijacking'.

Would you not agree that Apple Communities is for any help/solutions that users have found?

Also, I never suggested a 'cause' to the similar symptoms.

cheers!

I did have it set up for both, and once I turned off the wi-fi it stopped creating new disks. They haven't resolved yet, but at least one piece of the issue was solved. Thanks!

When you have it set up that way, and you don’t reserve IP addresses for the different interfaces, on wake, one will connect before the other, but the router will have another device using that IP address with the same name, so OS X renames the computer. However, it appears to be more common with Yosemite, so it may be something going wrong in Yosemite.

I have same problem unfortunately

Take a look at this thread

Yosemite [erroneously] displays multiple Shared Instances under Finder

Just upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 to see if it resolves the issue

Unfortunately this affects File Sharing, Home Sharing (AppleTV sees sometimes 8 computers..), Remote on my iPhone etc..

I downloaded a Bonjour Browser (which is helpful in troubleshooting)

(Seems to be a problem with Bonjour Sleep Proxy and WakeOn LAN)

I have this, too. I have upgraded to 10.10.1 and it is still happening. I tried restarting my modem, but that did nothing. I now have 17 copies of my computer in the network file. I changed the name of the first one, but I can't fid a way to delete the others. My iMac has gotten very slow from this, and I really want it to stop.

How do I delete the extra files? Even if the compute makes more, it would be better with 2 or 3 than with 18.

Thanks. Based on your advice and others in the thread, I turned off Bonjour Sharing. I also turned off the wi-fi to this computer, and will rely on my ethernet only. So far, things seem to be working a bit better, and I will await a fix in a future OS update. The list of extra computers is still shown in the network tab (and if you try to delete them, it says they cannot be deleted), but they no longer show up in the list of Shared computers when the contents of the whole hard drive is being displayed. Progress, I guess.

At least I did not have to do some stuff that the guy at the Apple store suggested. He thought this arose from the File Vault program, and said if it was turned on (it wasn't), and I tried to turn it off, the entire computer could crash irretrievably. Now, I can breathe a bit.
