Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I got email copied on your first response, and I share some of your feelings. Unless 8.1.1 falls on us quickly with some more reasonable solutions, there will be two fewer iPhones in the home for my routers to talk to.

Mine was obviously a "solution" to the immediate problem of solving connectivity issues at home with specific hardware. As much as anything, I'm curious to draw out what is in common with those of us having similar experiences. Aside from the D-Link box I don't know anything about, it appears Broadcom is a theme on the hardware front. Interesting. Interesting for Apple devs, perhaps....?

Deffo game centre causing grief. If I launch angry birds and then go to main screen throughput on speedtest is well down. Only way to get it recover is either reboot or seemingly force quit angry birds and more often than not its back at full speed. So game centre and possibly presence of AirPlay and control centre implementation all seeming to have drastic influence. Useless Apple - why are we doing something their QA testers and engineers should of spotted!

I don't think that needs to be asked. iOS 8.1 *****. Hoping this new update fixes ALL issues. When it's available, I'm downloading

Except for those of us on 7.1.2 that were able to roll back.

This thread is pretty quite now also.

I have not heard anything from the Apple care people for well over two weeks now i have emailed them and even called them but they never call back. It seems this thread has gone quiet now, i know it hasnt been resolved im guessing people have either brought a different device (none IOS) or are just feed up now.

it is a real shame that this has happened i like apple devices but when you need something for work or you are just trying to show something on apple tv to family or even trying to show your kids a film on the tv or you tube and oyu get constant buffereing or wifi drop means its just a long day and a waste of time

Yeah I think people are fed up. The problems certainly haven't gone away. Am tired of apple. I done the whole profile thing with an apple care guy weeks ago and have heard jack all in weeks. I speculated things like Game Center, control centre and even presence of AirPlay are causing throughput drops on my 5s but it's fallen on deaf ears. if I force quit any app that uses game centre things improve but it's still far from perfect. I don't get drops but the slowness at times drives me mad. There are so many issues on ios 8 it's unbelievable. Posting on this forum is hard, 'other' space leeching, Safari at times shows constant wifi activity in top right despite pages being fully loaded, tv shows episode thumbnails not showing, wifi problems, sluggish running on my iPad, iTunes sync issues via USB where songs don't copy despite being selected  .... I could go on and on and on. But far and away the worst is the dire wifi - it's the lifeblood of the phone along with the ability to text or call. I cannot believe they bodged it so bad. Issues were brought up in beta phase but they just ignored it and released anyway. Clearly their QA testing is inadequate.

I am beyond fed up at this point - telling me that I need to spend $269 for a phone that works because your update messed it up in the first place is just adding insult to injury if you ask me.  There has been not one single proposed solution that works and this has made my phone just about useless.

Just an update. I purchased a new AC router as it was time to upgrade anyway (used to have the Linksys EA4500 N900 router). I got the new Linksys E8350 AC2400 router and I continued to have the same Wifi issues we are all having with our iOS devices, in my case the iPad Air 2. I wrote to Linksys support and this was their reply:

To properly isolate the matter, we suggest that you assign different names to both bands (2GHz & 5GHz). Just access the setup page manually through 192.168.1.1 and go to the Wireless tab. Click on Manual and you will see the SSID field for both bands. While you're at it, please tweak on the channel settings under the 2.4Ghz. You may try channel 11, 9 3 or 1. Leave the 5Ghz band to auto and sign into the 5Ghz SSID.

Needless to say, this has worked 24+ hours for me. No disconnects or dropped speeds at all. I renamed my 5GHz band SSID to a different name and logged in to it. I think the problem is the iOS  software is not completely compatible with the"N" protocol for some reason.

Any of you with AC routers try doing the same thing and report back here.

i know, i have done all the script fixes they offered and of course usually this might fix a problem but surely they must realise this is not he case this time. Why arent more people complaining about this im using my data plan up all the time because of this and it really is not fun losing connection during important things.

I got fed up as well. I was due for a new access point and bought an Asus router and configured it as a WAP.  The wifi problem is not gone but much better.  I have multiple access points in the house. Two built into the Xfinity modem, two built into an Asus router and two in the new Asus router/access point.  I've found that you have to muck with the channels to get the iOS 8.x devices to work better. My guess is that ios8 has trouble staying connected when there are multiple SSIDs available.

Dan, try Linksys's suggestion in my reply above. Create two separate SSIDs in your new AC router (if that's what you got) and have your iOS 8.x devices connect with the 5GHz SSID on Auto channel mode and report back here after a few hours. It worked for me.

The iOS software does not play nice with "N" routers for some reason.
