Just got a brand new 5k 27" iMac and have exact same problem as you! Finder only showing contents when in list view....Icons are nowhere to be seen when I'm in Icon view....
I haven't even started using it yet! Just created a new profile, installed Adobe Cloud for Photoshop and Lightroom....thats all I've done and it's happening. Just hope a software update cures it!
I'll keep tabs on this thread to see how you get on and if I find anything I'll let you know....

My second profile has become my real one as it has been working correctly for days. I did not reinstall yosemite-I simply created a second profile and all my software was there from the first profile. I did have to customize the user settings.
I have never been able to get the first profile to work correctly and I've tried every fix here except reinstalling Yosemite.
I'm a bit bummed with Apple/Applecare. Long chat, long phone call, guy made an appt to call me back the next night, he never did. Took him another day to leave a voice mail, said he would call me, never did. I basically fixed this on my own by creating a second profile and so far, so good. No idea what corrupted the first one.

In my case, I know exactly what I installed that triggered the problem - the Transporter desktop app... This supports the theory that the issue seems to involve Retina Display Macs (mines an original 13" RD), and the use of cloud-sync apps (other than iCloud).
First things first: send Apple feedback (this is essential: go and do that if you haven't already! http://www.apple.com/feedback/)
I've discovered something interesting that I haven't spotted in this thread so far... Ignoring the problem seems to be another way of at least temporarily resolve it... This could connect to why so many different things people do seem to clear the problem for a while?

Perhaps I've overlooked an app but it's not hitting me what is different especially since I simply created a new profile that copied over all of my already installed applications.
Could you explain what you mean by ignoring the problem seems to resolve it? I certainly found that about every 2nd or 3rd time of opening the finder that it may work. But as soon as I re-sized the window or changed folders the problems were prone to continue.
Has anyone else created a 2nd user profile on their system and had this problem duplicate on their 2nd profile? So far, my 2nd profile continues to work perfectly while my first one does not.

Don't bother to reinstall Yosemite, I've done it twice and it didn't resolve the problem. I think what Chris trying to say is just ignore the problem until Apple fix it. Like i said before my prime suspect was Adobe CC (Illustrator, Photoshop etc.) but since not everybody install it and still having the problem, I take it down from my list. Next cloud base storage also has been taken down from my list. First reinstall of Yosemite, i did install Dropbox. The second reinstall I didn't even install it and the problem is right there after a fresh install of Yosemite. Now I'm waiting for a fix from Apple.

A good indicator that it is a bug is that it is occurring on brand new systems. We can play around with user configurations all we want, but it won't fix the root cause that causes the issue in the first place. Thats over to Apple to do.
All that is required is for Apple to know that the bug occurs, this is playing a game based on faith as Apple isn't good at communicating that it knows that an issue exists. We'll just have to hope that the final version of 10.1.1 contains a fix.

Yes, waiting for Apple to isolate the issue and fix it is the real solution. However, given how rare the problem is, pooling our knowledge in this thread is also useful.
Has anybody else seen cases of spontaneous remission? Seriously, I Installed Transporter Desktop, the problem appeared. I logged out and back in, restarted a couple of times without success, relaunched Finder - which helped for a few seconds, checked Transporter for updates... no solution. Then I deleted Evernote, because I haven't actually used it for at least 2 years, and I'm trying to clean up a bit. Pretty sure that at that point I was still having to access the Applications folder in list view.
Went off and did some other things, found this thread, posted "me too", sent Feedback to Apple, then opened my Applications folder again to see if I still had Onyx installed.
Hey presto, I'm in icon view and all icons are present and accounted for. Accessed the Transporter and flicked a few files around, everything syncing fine, icon view still working ok...
So I went and edited my original post to reflect this change, and went on with my day. I've now been off the network and back on, in and out of a range of apps, the issue has not come back. Anyway, back to work... I'll post if I learn anything more.

I've had my 5k iMac for about a week. This problem appeared fairly early on (not sure exactly when). I have adobe CC installed and not much else. I'm not sure if this problem arrived after installing CC or not. I have spent a couple of hours on the phone with an Apple senior support agent and it wasn't possible to fix in my main user account. We created another test user account and so far that seems clear of the problem. I have Yosemite on my retina Macbook Pro. No issues with that. I have a very clear picture now of the symptoms of this fault and how to work around it, but it is irritating. Like the rest of you I guess I'll just have to wait until Apple fixes it. Incidentally, a reinstall of Yosemite had no effect.

I thought maybe there was something wrong with it and was going to take it in because it came with Yosemite installed and it I didn't put any backed up software or apps on it. Interestingly enough it does not and has never happened to my 2011 iMac 27". I upgraded to Yosemite and I have never seen this issue with it. Weird but I hope Apple provides a fix.
