Q: No SIM card installed keeps popping up

I have been using my wifi/cellular iPad mini without a SIM card for the last eight months without a problem. I 'upgraged' to os8 a couple of days ago and now I get a pop up telling me there's no SIM card installed every few minutes. It popped up twice whilst trying to type this message. I have looked everywhere in settings for a way to disable it, thinking that perhaps certain apps were prompting it. Will I have to put a sim card to avoid this? I was told when I bought it, that without a SIM card it would be just like a wifi only ipad. or will I have to reset it to factory settings and load everything again? Thanks in advance.

Using workarounds to DISABLE the WAN function is not what I came to this forum for.  I came here to discover a fix that lets me continue to use the WAN function, since this is what I paid for and rely on.  We should all be pushing for this, and if someone discovers a fix to enable me to use what I paid for, then I will be delighted.

Since I have already engaged Apple on-line support without success, are there other courses of action we can take with Apple?   I am now sure that this issue is software/iOS related, and not a hardware defect, and also clearly something that no amount of user workarounds can fix.

    This ^^^^.

Since installing v8.1, putting the thing in Airplane Mode, re-enabling Bluetooth & WiFi, turning off Cellular Data everywhere I can find it and turning off stuff which I never use altogether (e.g. Siri) the message doesn't come up as often as it did when I first "upgraded" to v8.  But IMHO except after a reboot it shouldn't be coming up at all.  Especially when some remedies work for some people and not others.  The only thing they have in common is that they're using an iPad of some sort, which suggests that it's not a user issue.  Which leaves but one party as Prime Suspect.

The easiest solution to this problem is put a sim in!!! If you don't have an old one then lots of providers will send out free sims they don't have to be valid or have a service, the one I am using isn't even on the right network!!! My ipad is locked to three and it is a French orange sim cut down to size with a pair of sizzors that is about 5 years out of date that I put in there and all that happens is top left it says no service!!! But I did this back when IOS 8 1st came out and I haven't had the pop up since!!!!

I found a clever workaround  . just ask Siri  to turn cellular data off

    I Have the solution

Tell Siri to "turn off Mobil data"

The upper left will change from No SIM to iPad. This works even though the turn cellular data off is grayed out, Siri can change it.

    yea, finally a solution.

Siri changed it but I still get the message, less often. It is not a solution neither.

Siri is disobedient and while she turns off mobile data the SIM card notice reappears. I'll go with the insert blank SIM card option

Does anyone from Apple actually monitor these forums? I haven't seen any comment from an Apple person in response to this yet.

No, Apple does not monitor these forums except under special circumstances to provide a response to unanswered questions that can be solved with a knowledge base article. These are user supported forums..

Turning off the Cellular settings does not help.  The message seems still popup.  Also, this seems to happen consistently after an upgrade to iOS 8.1

    Some general observations:

Whilst it isn't the purist's answer, I have inserted a SIM card and this has solved the problem completely. Completely, in the sense that I no longer get the very annoying NO SIM CARD INSERTED notification on my Ipad3. However, this was not an issue prior to the IOS 8 upgrade. Apple should be able to solve this problem without having to insert a Sim card as the solution.

Furthermore, I will NOT be upgrading my iPhone 4s to iOS 8...because the upgrade to 7.1.2 has resulted in decreased efficiency and I won't diminish performance further through an upgrade to 8. I am comforted by the fact that this opinion is shared by many fellow bloggers in other forums!

Until a fix comes from Apple, in the words of Molly Meldrum "do yourself a favour" and insert a Sim card.

    Good Luck
