Q: How to downgrade iTunes 12 to 11.4?

I recently upgraded iTunes to 12.0.1 and want to downgrade back to 11.4. I run the 11.4 installer and it says "A newer version of iTunes is already installed." So I use the terminal to delete it (sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app/) and also trash the preferences as well as Library/Caches/com.apple.iTunes. Now I'm able to run the 11.4 installer, but when I launch iTunes, I get an error: "A required iTunes component is not installed. Please reinstall iTunes (-42401)." Any ideas on how I can successfully downgrade iTunes to 11.4?

It needs to be 11.4 since I share my iTunes library between two macs via file sharing, and one of them is an older mac which is unable to upgrade to version 12.

Any help appreciated! Thanks

One other warning: some (all?) of your iTunes preferences will be lost in the "upgrade" - restore process. I just realised yesterday that every CD I've ripped in the past month since the iTunes 12 debacle was ripped to AAC rather than ALAC.

Sigh. 101 CDs to redo in lossless format. Fortunately it seems most of the edits to metadata I did are preserved, and maybe some of the artwork.

So now I am wondering about any updates to Mavericks - assuming there are anymore. Will an update reinstall iTunes 12? Is there a way to prevent that besides not installing the update? Same question if I get around to upgrading to Yosemite.

Hi, I want to downgrade iTunes 12 to 11.4 on Mavericks. Have used Pacifist.

    "Step 5: Install iTunes 10.7

Open Pacifist and drag the iTunes 10.7 DMG file to the main Pacifist Application Window. Now click the Install icon in the Menu bar."

But it doesn't work. I CAN'T click the Install icon. Why?

nLook in this thread for the earlier post by Julien VIEILLEFONT. Strarightforward instructions how to downgrade using Terminal. I've done it three times already (don't ask!!).  Follow his instructions even if you have never used Terminal before its easy. No auxiliary applications required! When you have finished the downgrade to iTunes 11.4, go to System Preferences, click on App Store to open it. The UNCHECK everything...this will prevent App Store from automatically upgrading apps including iTunes. I had 2 auto upgrades to iTunes 12 before I learned this!

It seems others had success with this but I didn't unfortunately, time machine was very stubborn and wouldn't let me restore the framework files.

However, I managed to restore the first set, and then not the others, so it completely ruined my iTunes installation, and I had to re-install iTunes 12.

Any advice on how to do the time machine restore of frameworks? Mine just closes that folder when entering time machine as though it's forbidden or something. I even tried showing hidden files. Like I said, it somehow worked for 1 set but not the others, and I couldn't repeat it.

    My following on question is:

Has anyone tried to downgrade to 11.4 from 12.0.1 running under Yosemite 10.10.1?

I am not going to install Yosemite if I am to be stuck with 12.0.1

You know what would be good?

If Apple didn't keep 'upgrading' iTunes in such a way that makes users long for the past version. It's ridiculous. Most upgrades add features.

Hi, was very pleased to see this recommendation of yours as it looks much more simple and logical. Here's one point: I have 12.0.1 installed, I opened my iTunes Library in my User's filesystem. What folders belonging to the library exactly do I need to back up? All existing 12.0.1 library?

Also you say it's necessary to restore "iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Library.xml, iTunes Library.itl,iTunes Music Library.xml and Previous iTunes Libraries folder". Out of these I have (see the pic)iTunes library.png

That's it. iTunes Library.xml and Previous iTunes libraries are absent here though I clearly recall having the latter one in 11.4 version. Or did you mean I have to restore from pre-downloaded 11.4 version?

Also, where do I find all these frameworks? And do they have to be of 11.4 or 12.0.1 version?

    Kindest regards,

    ILYA

How to downgrade iTunes 12 to 11.4?

I did exactly that last night, and now have iTunes 11.4 running on Yosemite 10.10.4.

I read articles detailing steps to follow like in the link you posted, but they failed to get my iTunes to run.

The editor of the first article even said

This probably won’t work on OS X Yosemite because Yosemite has always had a version of iTunes 12, which could mean the only option would be to downgrade from OS X Yosemite back down to OS X Mavericks, and then downgrade iTunes 12 to 11 as described here.

But it IS possible, and not really that difficult.

I figured out that I had to edit the version number in some files. Here's my steps to use in addition to the ones given if you still encounter problems.

Although editing the files is very simple, I understand while some users may not want to attempt it.

After following the steps outlined in the article, iTunes didn’t want to open so I looked at the iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml file. I noticed v12.2.2 was listed on the 8th line, so I changed it to 11.4.

Then I had to change the version number in the first line of the iTunes/Library Name/iTunes Library file inside the iTunes/Library Name folder.

When iTunes started again it said it was importing from the XML file.
    Importing.png

It can take a long time to import the library the first time. I have nearly 20,000 tracks and it took about 20 minutes.

It will seem like it’s frozen, but just let it finish. After that you’ll probably get the “not a valid library” warning

    iTunes Damaged Library.png

When I clicked OK, iTunes opened and began analyzing the songs (another 10 minutes or so) and there never was a Damaged Library file created.
I copied my iTunes Plug-ins folder and Scripts folder into the new Library/iTunes folder and they’re all working now, including iWOW, and my playlists are intact.

My podcasts weren't completely organized and artwork I'd added was missing, so I had to spend time changing some data in the Get Info window.

Although I have three libraries in my iTunes folder, I only had to edit the iTunes Library and files for my Main library - the others opened right up when selected by holding Option while opening iTunes. Don't know why the main library wouldn't open until I changed the version number while the others did, but that's what happened.

One nice thing about iTunes 11 is you don’t have to hold the Option key while clicking the green button to maximize the window. So that seems to be a function of the app, not a Yosemite requirement.

After spending hours reverting, I’m not sure I gained anything – v11 looks a lot like v12, and I thought I’d get back the sidebar artwork, now I find that was an iTunes 10 feature. D’oh!
I was trying to avoid the bloat – don’t want Apple Music or Apple Music Connect, and fortunately (unfortunately?) I don’t own any devices I need to sync. I'm now looking for an iTunes alternative.

I hope these additional steps help someone, GOOD LUCK and GOODBYE ITUNES 12!

You can also just delete those files and reinstall iTunes 11 with installer.
