    Well, when you say that you'd think Apple would inform you of these things ... the fact of the matter is that Apple does inform you. That's why they have all those support articles and explanations about these things. But, it's true that individual Apple employees may not be up on all those details, as I found out. That may very well be the case. But, in fact, Apple (i.e., the "company") does inform you. It's there and it's in their support information.

    As I've found out over the years with anything doing with "backups" ... in that you're depending on a company "doing something" that you apparently think that they should ... is - at the bottom line - it always comes back to the individual owner himself or herself. You have to be the last line of defense, when it comes to backups.

    And that's precisely why I was going through all these steps, finding out the "ins and outs" of the iCloud backup, when I was talking to the "Genius" at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store. I was trying to verify some information I had about it. I did that precisely because I was going to change iPads and with the new one, I was going to reload everything back onto it from my iCloud backup and I wanted to know the limitations of doing that. You just can't take these kinds of things for granted ... or even depend upon the word of one or two employees. You have to verify and verify ... first.

    That's not just "Apple" ... but that's with anything in any industry and any business where the "outcome" is critical to you, personally.

    I have 4s and it's a great device. IOS 8 in my iphone just ruined idea of Apple as company that create a products for the people. IOS 8 is slow, clumsy bad designed. Now Apple looks like as money machine shouting- buy new. But not any more. It was my last iphone, killed by creator. Goodbye Apple.

    No, Apple doesn't permit downgrading.

    oh dear what a shame Apple are making such appalling commercial decisions. My ipad mini may as well be thrown in the bin then! Same story with my wife's iphone 4s, think we would have upgraded both in the near future but think we'll move off to Samsung and give them guys a try

    THrow it my way. IOS8 works fine for me, allowing for some annoying bugs in the first versions and some unnecessary design changes in Safari.

    of course I backed up all my data and cleaned out the ipad mini to factory condition before attempting the upgrade. Any attempt to upgrade with all your stuff in place will always have an element of risk. That has been tne situation since I can remember.

    IF your ipad mini is not actually broken, it will perform like new if you set it up like new.

    Can you imagine the howl that would have gone up if Apple didn't update the mini, the iPads 2 and 3 and iPhone 4s ? People are still complaining they can't update their iPad 1 to IOS 8.

    The "history" of the matter is that Apple has NEVER ONCE had people go in reverse and go backwards to an older iOS. And the history I'm talking about is in the entire history of the existence of iPhone and subsequent products.

    That would create a mess of a situation and there is no support infrastructure for backing up customers in doing so. Many of them would end up with locked and non-functional devices, because something went wrong.

    The PROPER WAY of handling things is if there is some issue you are dealing with, you "move forward to a solution" in order to have a fully working device. I presume that is your true goal.

    **** I am very unhappy with Apple about not being able to downgrade.

    My device was fast and very functional before upgrading. ( mc775c/a iPad2 wifi/GSM)

    After a full reset and restore it is still too slow and buggy to use.

    * App's crash,

    * long delays,

    * Very slow web browsing,

    * The interface stutters, this makes the device frustrating to use.

    The older 7.1.2 OS was fast and snappy, this new OS 8.1 has ruined my iPad experience.

    I would do a reset to factory default condition, and follow the troubleshopting methodology below ...

    Follow this procedure for a Troubleshooting Methodology ... basically reset to factory default condition -BUT- be sure to do the following methodically and also to follow the part with Apple Support!

    First you want to make sure you have several backups of your data and done with a couple of "different" sources. Be sure to understand what data is backed up and what is NOT on iCloud Backup and iTunes Backup. Use a variety of methods for backup ... you might check into Dropbox, in addition to your Apple options.

    Then turn off your desktop anti-virus software when using iTunes for this reset to factory default. After you do that reset, then leave your iPad in its factory default state and see how it operates then. If you encounter any problems in that factory default state, then take it to Apple Support, and let them know that you have just reset it to that state with iTunes and have not put any of your data back on and it is operating in this fashion (whatever the problem is) in that pristine state. Make sure you keep that trouble ticket number, because if it has to be escalated through Apple Support, you're going to find all communications tied in with that number. If the lower level help isn't able to help you, then escalate it to a higher level to examine the problem. Keep at it with that trouble ticket number until Apple Support arrives at a solution to that problem. Be methodical and keep at it.

    On the other hand, if everything is okay with the factory default condition, then restore your backup. Some people have discovered that the problem resides in the apps or something in the restored backup. If that's the case, then it's going to be trying and difficult to find out which developer's app is causing you the problem. And ... it's true ... that a developer not following Apple's instructions and guidelines for his app can CAUSE YOU TROUBLE. This kind of thing does happen from developers, especially when a new system upgrade comes out, because some developers ignore what Apple tells them about changes coming, and what they do BREAKS SOMETHING.

    This is a troubleshooting methodology that you are going through. See it through to the end.

    It's fair advice, thanks.

    + I reset it to factory default condition. ( mc775c/a iPad2 wifi/GSM)

    + I reinstalled the OS

    * It is way slow only useing factory apple apps.

    * The interface still stutters.

    * sluggish response time.

    I really want to down grade this back to IOS7.1.2 .., Unless Apple chooses to fix performance problems with old hardware.

    exactly the same problem here too

    factory restore using itunes, the unit is now slow and takes much longer to load than ios 7. I also would like to downgrade to ios 7, when will apple wake up to the realisation that older hardware is being slowed down and some users are demanding a downgrade?
