Q: No Sound on iPhone 4S after iOS 8 Upgrade

After updating to iOS 8 on my iPhone 4S, at first there kinda was sound for a brief period of time of about a day or two. However, that sound was noticeably distorted and inconsistent as it would go in an out. Now the phone is completely not outputting any sound at all for any function or app. I've already tried turning the phone off and on, no change. I tried rebooting the phone by holding the home key and power button together, no change.

Is there any fix I can implement now? Or am I stuck waiting until Apple releases a patch update to iOS 8?

I have the problems as well.  I have 2 4s' and BOTH are affected.  Anytime I make calls, the rcvr can hear me fine but I cannot hear the other party. This is a direct result of upgrading to iOS 8.1.  Bluetooth did work for the first 2 days, but now it does not show any of my devices, rendering that useless too.

I can play music that is stored on the iPhone and hear it from the speakers, but when i listen to ring tones, they cut off after 1 second.

    PLEASE FIX APPLE….SOON

I spent 17 hours over the weekend trying to fix/resolve.  3 hours of that was with CHAT, which was a joke. Since most 4s' are out of warranty, go to support page at apple.com and proceed with service…there will be a service exception box to check for those with issues 'upgrading' to iOS 8 (NO CHARGE). Check the box, then select your iPhone and set up a phone call back (I know, your phone doesn't work, but set up a call back at a phone you can talk on). When you get a rep, escalate it to a TIER 2 Senior Advisor, and go through it all with that person.  You will (if you haven't already) go through all sorts of Restores…like a recovery restore, etc. After its all done and your device still does not work, ask the advisor for a WARRANTY EXCEPTION. They will provide warranty coverage so you can get a replacement from a Apple Store near you or by mail. The rep should then set up a Genius appt at the store and you then can swap out at NO CHARGE.

I picked up 2 exact replacement 4s' and everything works now.

I know its crazy, but save yourself some time and just head to apple.com and set up that call back.

    hope this helps

I had the same problem, so what I did is I put my phone on a charger/speaker and put it up to max using the speaker volume rockers. I then started a YouTube video while it was on the speaker( the sound worked from the speaker/charger ), then without pausing the video I took the phone off, because the video would pause itself. Then I began the video again, when it was off the speaker. The phone speakers began to sound and I checked third party apps throughout my phone and everything has been working beautifully again, hope it helps ...

I had the same problem where most apps dont have sounds while siri and other essential apps (phone/voice memos/etc) would play sounds as they normally would, therefore it's not a hardware issue and now ggogle search led me to this thread which led me to think this was due to the ios8 update.

And then I realized I accidentally put the silent switch to on and now I feel stupid for blaming the ios 8 update lol

Dear users who's speakers arent working,

This is how i fixed the problem. Go to voice memos and make sure you speaker in the top left corner is white. Then put your speakers to full blast but note, at this moment, you cant hear any voice memos. now as you click the home button keep lowering you volume for 3 seconds and it should fix the problem. At the home page after doing what i told you, you should be able to lower and raise your ringer/volume in various apps.

if this doesn't help try playing youtube and putting in and out headphones but other than that i have no other advise, sorry.

Almost certainly right. It's a common intermittent fault due to the lousy design of the multiway connector on the iPhone 4. A bit of grit or moisture gets in the connector and it thinks it's docked and nothing will persuade it otherwise (other than poking with a sharp implement).

Given that less than 1% of iPhones ever see a dock, you'd think that Apple would have sorted it out by now, but they don't seem to be interested.

Anyway, it's not a bug in iOS 8 - just dreadful hardware design. The answer - get an Android. They're more robust and their makers aren't as arrogant as Apple.

For a sign and a wonder, I think I have a solution. I sprayed the docking orifice with spectacle cleaner*, wiggled the charging/backup connector in said orifice and lo! The sound came  back

This is a problem that's existed since the iPhone 3 - maybe it'll be fixed by the iPhone 7, but that would require Apple to admit that it exists, which they haven't so far...

    * isopropyl alcohol, I think.

Hello there, I just fix my problem with the Battery Doctor app downloaded in appstore. after install this app...please try delete all your junk files by using battery doctor app. one time click deletions might not enough to clear all your junk/cache, you may need to click multiple time in order to completely clearing your problematic junk files in your iPhone. after all this step please try sound again. then u are done....its work with my iPhone 4s

I can't help feeling that a lot of these 'solutions' simply give the hardware a chance to unclog itself naturally.

    Thanks! Charger connector wiggling helped!

Apple needs to get a grip with their connectors: first my wife's iPhone 5's headphone jack got stuck (sucked on it & it fixed it). Now this with my iPhone 4s.
