Q: iPhone 6 - iTunes Problem

When I plug in my iPhone 6 to my computer and go to iTunes I get the following error message:

The iPhone “iPhone” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes.

This is a brand new iPhone which should have the latest version of iTunes, but just in case I updated to the latest iOS 8 to make sure there wasn't a problem there.

When I try to download iTunes onto the iPhone 6 I get a message saying that iTunes is already loaded on the phone.

So, how do I download my song library on my new iPhone 6?

Thank you.

iTunes runs on your computer. Not on the phone.

Download and install the current version of iTunes on your computer.

    Hello Tim,

    Sorry, but you didn't help.

In the statement "The iPhone “iPhone” cannot be used because it requires…" the word "it" refers to the iPhone not my computer. Just in case I did make sure that the latest version of iTunes was downloaded to my computer. I still get the same message.

What version of iTunes are you running on your computer. EXACTLY. Don't say "the latest version". Give us the version number. Are you using a Mac or a PC? If it's a Mac, what version of OS X is it running?

Did you power cycle the computer after installation of the latest version of iTunes? Tim was correct in that the error message you received was referring to the computer. Check the iTunes that you have installed and what version does it say that it is? Is it 11.4?

You cannot install iTunes on the phone, it is part of the iOS. Did you disconnect the phone from the computer while updating and then connect again after it finished and you rebooted the computer and restarted iTunes?

The iPhone “iPhone” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes.

As Kilted Tim stated, you explicitly said that "This is a brand new iPhone which should have the latest version of iTunes, but just in case I updated to the latest iOS 8 to make sure there wasn't a problem there".

What is that statement supposed to mean then? It does mean the phone but "it" means that the phone needs a newer version of iTunes on your computer. "It" would not need iTunes on the phone itself which is what Tim was trying to express.

The phone requiring a newer version of iTunes means that it needs 11.4 regardless of PC or Mac. Also, are you getting this message when trying to restore your device from a backup of an old device or just syncing it up to iTunes to add music?

    I'm running OS X 10.6.8 & iTunes 11.3.1 (2)

Yes, I have done a "power cycle" after installing the "latest" version of iTunes from the iTunes website.

What I'm attempting to do is to download my music files from my iMac to my new iPhone. As soon as I plug in the phone to the computer as I said before, I get the following statement:

The iPhone “iPhone” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes.

I am currently finding a different page on iTunes where it is downloading version 11.4 onto my computer. Perhaps that will indeed solve the problem but why it didn't do that before I don't know. As usual Apple makes something very simple into something that is very confusing.

iOS 8 REQUIRES iTunes 11.4 installed on your computer.

Thanks for all the help. As usual all Apple had to do was say that in their error message. It's working fine now.

I just went through the same issue.  Part of the problem/confusion was I checked within iTunes for an update, and it indicated my iTunes was up to date, even though I only had iTunes 13.x. After reading this thread, I tried many times, but it kept saying my iTunes was current.

I thought maybe I needed to update the Mac's OS.  I tried it; the Mac OS was current, but it began downloading iTunes 14.1 in the process.

    oops.  I meant to say 11.3.x and 11.4, not 13.x and 14.1.

iTunes also misled me because it said that I had the latest version of iTunes.  I did not.  You gave me the clue.  Thanks.

The error message was ambiguous and incomplete.  You gave me a clue that I needed.  Thanks!

The error message was poor.  You helped me figure out what was really going on.  Thanks.
