Nov 18, 2014 11:15 AM in response to jflowersby Darkahn,Initially I loaded iOS 8.1 in recovery mode. After that I restored a backup (from iCloud) of my configuration. Now I have done an incremental upgrade to 8.1.1 through the update facility. This is working well for me currently.

Nov 18, 2014 6:15 PM in response to MarknMikelby Jibtrim,This isn't completely in reply to MarknMikel, but a few general observations
There are several valuable lessons to be learned from the iPad 2 / iOS 8 debacle.
1) While the iPad 2 is in more hands than any other iPad, it was at the very bottom of the compatibility list. I learned the hard way not to update iOS if at the bottom of the list -- iOS 4 turned my iPhone 3G into an expensive paperweight. When iOS 13 comes out and you are still rocking the iPhone 6+, wait a few weeks before updating and see what happens to the poor souls who rushed out to update their phone. If they are singing from the mountaintop, by all means update yours. If they are cursing Tim Cook's parents and tailor, don't update.
2) Apple hedged its bets with allowing iOS 8 on the iPad 2. If they didn't allow it, many users would've complained that they weren't getting all there goodies and benefits touted for iOS 8. If it didn't work well (as was the case for iOS 8), many of the same people would complain. So, they released it and waited for the uproar.
3) Apple took iOS 8.1.1 very seriously because they released it to beta testers. iOS x.x.x have NEVER been beta tested before. This says that they listened to the cries of iPad 2 users.
4) The fact that you spent good money several years ago in no way means that you are guaranteed infinite bliss. Were that the case, I'd try to shove OS X Yosemite on my Apple II.
I own an iPad 2 and did not update to 8. I won't update to 8.1.1 until I see several weeks of positive reviews.
Buying shiny gadgets is a gamble.

Nov 18, 2014 6:24 PM in response to Jibtrimby Darkahn,I don't think that anyone here would dispute the points that you make. However there are early adopters in every segment. The one thing that we are all frustrated with is the absolute radio silence on the issues we are experiencing with iOS 8 and iPad 2. Additionally we all have to reconcile the fact that if something should happen to iOS 7, our only recourse is to move to iOS 8 at some future point. Had Apple not resolved the issues, we would have been upset at a later date, and with fewer options.

Nov 18, 2014 6:40 PM in response to gtwscwby cam-l,I Have the same problem plus very slow internet, cut and paste pasting things I copied days ago, frequent crashes and several other issues. I took my iPad into the Apple Store and an hour after the 10 minutes they said it would take to reinstall iOS 8 continue to experience all the same issues.
I Am beginning to think that this is a planned obsolescence for us older iPad owners.

Nov 18, 2014 6:55 PM in response to cam-lby Darkahn,cam-l, You will need to do a backup of your iPad, then put your iPad into recovery mode and load iOS 8.1.1. Once this is complete you can either reload the system from backup or set up as new. After that you should be operating well.

Nov 18, 2014 7:36 PM in response to gtwscwby Crackas,i am using iPad mini and was pretty much useless for over a month after ios8 update. Most annoying prob was unable to enter info into web pages, forms etc. it would freeze and have to reset iPad. Spoke to my brother who is a IT wiz and he said the processor in mini isn't powerful enough ! I have had mini for just over a year and it is obsolete ?!?!?! And I paid twice the price of Samsung equivalent
Looks like Apples days of 'just working' are coming to an end. Have been trying to convince several people who are very computer illiterate to go for Apple as their products are very user friendly and WORK. My tech credibility has been destroyed by ios8. I won't be promoting Apple products in any foreseeable future.
Steve Jobs would be turning in his grave !!!

Nov 18, 2014 7:40 PM in response to Crackasby Darkahn,Crackas,
You also need to reload your iPad from recovery mode and then either restore from backup, or set up as new. The processor in the mini is better than the iPad 2, so should be much better after the OS reload.

Nov 18, 2014 8:13 PM in response to Darkahnby Crackas,Hey thanks for reply,
guessing it it will be a fairly time consuming task. Grrrr, wish I could just undo update.
WIll give it a shot, fingers crossed.
when backing up through iTunes is there anything that doesn't get backed up i.e 3rd party app data ?
i Use goodreader and have had probs backing up my PDFs that I put in folders ( seem to only be able to do single files not in Goodreader folders ) have not tried since updating goodreader a week ago, hopefully this has been fixed.
i Also have an iPhone 4s that I held off updating ( I WOULD HAVE LOST THE PLOT HAD BOTH DEVICES GONE DOWN )
I will have to check some forums to see how 4s is coping.
Becoming too reliant on these devices...........maybe I should ditch them and get a life again
cheers.

Nov 18, 2014 11:27 PM in response to Jibtrimby MarknMikel,Yes I fully agree, and you know whats funny is my iPad is 3rd gen, it's the one before the connector was made smaller, I made sure it's the 3rd gen, by the number on the back of my device and geting the apple person I saw when I went into apple when iso8 killed my iPad, so it should be a little more adept to updates..well thats my opinion. So anyway... haven't been sent the next update yet, so shall wait till after I update, to say my iPad has been resurrected!

Nov 19, 2014 5:16 AM in response to BlueUproarby JoeBlowCarpenter,Apple is really playing dirty now. I needed iOS 7 for apps that kept on crashing in IOS8. I decided to bite the bullet and buy a iPad mini since it had iOS 7 on it. I went into iOS update to check what version was currently installed. It immediately started downloading IOS 8 without my permission. I ended up yanking my wifi to delay that, and decided that the best route was to try to wipe my New iPad mini 2. I had called Apple and the woman just got all defensive. She told me that stuff wouldn't work correctly without iOS 8 in the APP store. I thought that the APP store was supposed to check your version of IOS and then download the appropriate version of the APP. Whatever happened to that? This is getting ridiculous. She also said wiping would break my device. So, I wiped it anyhow and all seems well for now.

Dec 12, 2014 11:32 AM in response to OlinOzby msmaron,No problems at all here, especially after 8.02 upgrade on Monday...Works good, fast, responsive and have no complaints what so ever..

Feb 5, 2015 10:54 AM in response to gtwscwby Plamar,I too am having the same issues. My ipad 2 is pretty much a brick at this point. I am only responding with the hope that if enough people complain on this forum Apple will remedy the situation. This is completely unacceptable. It is one thing for hardware to become obsolete, but to go from a perfectly usable device to worthless from a single upgrade is more thand frustrating. Perhaps it is time to look at other tablet alternatives.

Mar 1, 2015 12:59 PM in response to Plamarby reedy777,same issues here didn't notice it because its mainly my five year old that uses it . I am tech savvy and I see it as a clear implementation to force an upgrade cycle. I divorced apple a while back because of similar shenanigans with the iPhone 4. my recommendation is to report this to consumer watchdog who will carry out an investigation and would be the most plausible way of twisting apples arm for a fix. as for me, I am much happier with the flexibility and cross compatibility my android phone provides. all my devices respond as you click! its a shame to see apple loose the principles that build it.

Jun 23, 2015 8:00 AM in response to gtwscwby Rosie51,Anyone still having problems with this? Both mine and my dad's Ipad 2s have become really slow since IOS8. Will getting rid of apps help?
