    I have a similar problem:

Crashed Thread:        8  Dispatch queue: NSOperationQueue 0x60800003d360 :: NSOperation 0x7f89c3c5f580

    Exception Type:        EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT)

    Exception Codes:       0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000

    Application Specific Information:

*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Absolute path passed into -[MFLocalAccount mailboxForRelativePath:isFilesystemPath:create:]: /Users/vascomarques/Desktop/Caixas de Mail/Pessoal/Duran.mbox'

    abort() called

terminating with uncaught exception of type NSException

It looks like mail.app thinks there is a .mbox file in the desktop but there is none.

Hello, just found an answer that worked for me:

    It was posted by:

    Linc Davis

    Good luck.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

    Go Go to Folder

from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.

A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:

    •Envelope Index

    •ExternalUpdates.storedata

Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.

Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.

Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

Help!  I tried this and Mail asks me for account information.  When I try to add my first account Mail freezes.  I'm totally stuck.  How do I go back to ground zero?  Restoring the files doesn't work either.

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is marked solved, less people are likely to look at it. You can link to this one.

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

This worked for me, beautifully! Thanks so much. Takes about 10 minutes of your time, but it does the job.

    for me:

Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Absolute path passed into -[MFLocalAccount mailboxForRelativePath:isFilesystemPath:create:]: /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users/myName/Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes/family.mbox'

Happened after a fresh install of OS and turn out to be old mail rules looking for a particular directory. I believe the rules sync in from iCloud. When I deleted:

    /Users/myName/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/SyncedRules.plist

    all was good

note.... I also had to go into system prefs / iCloud / options / and uncheck 'mail'

to stop the rules file from returning
