Purchase the RAM from a reputable site such as OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial. iMacs are sensitive to RAM and dealing with a reputable vendor is wise and can save you time in the long-run. OWC even has instructional videos on how to correctly install RAM in your model iMac.

Nov 21, 2014 11:17 AM in response to tshompy28by Phil0124,The Mid 2011 iMac can be upgraded to a max of 16GB.
So theoretically it should be possible to get it to 12 in that configuration.
For best compatible RAM I suggest Crucial.

Photos for MacAllan,
Actually a 2011 iMac can support up to 32GB. I have a 27" model with 24GB installed.
