Q: Thunderbolt Display "dead" after firmware upgrade to Version 1.2

Hi,

I just run the Thunderbolt F/W update to 1.2 as offered by the AppStore Update. I have a 2014 MacPro with 2 Displays connected. In good faith I just confirmed to apply the update without much reading the fine print. The F/W update brought the system to a complete standstill. After 2 hours of waiting in the boot screen, I rebooted the system manually (5 secs power button). One of the Thunderbolt displays first just flickered, then decided to completely die. The System report says: unknown device in the Thunderbolt section. The 2nd display hasn't been updated during this procedure.

How can the F/W of the 'dead' display be re-installed? I also tried to connect it to a MacBook pro. Same result. The display is entirely black.

Any help or suggestion is much appreciated. Thanks!

Same situation here. The firmeware update froze and I hard-restarted to get out of it. The Thunderbolt Display still worked at that point, but next day when I came into the office it did not. It's also not working if I try to connect my colleagues' laptops either. Seems like the display itself is bricked.

Tried the safe restart, got an awfully long loading bar and then a flickering display on my MBP, but no joy for the Thunderbolt Display.

Not the most appetizing solution to this problem, but once my system froze at the start up trying to install 10.10.1 (2011 Mac Mini and TBD) I decide to restore the system to 10.10.  via my backup on my TC. A tedious process but everything was back to normal once it was done. Being a glutton for punishment I tried the 10.10.1 update a few days later and it went smoothly.

    Well it's incredible but..

I had exactly the same problem and my TB was a brick since the update (made on last tuesday). I lurked into this post while calling support and it smelled very bad.

However as I heard the TB fan going on one second and then off each time I replugged the TB on electricity, I thought it was trying to boot but was failing - so it was not this dead. I decided to keep it plugged for a few days and this morning when waking up I was thrilled: it's back alive!!

So you guys may try to keep it plugged for a time (I waited five days) and maybe it will be back also? It's worth the try if you don't have a guarantee..

    Cheers!

Count me in for this issue.

Installed the firmware update, machine froze mid way through. Hard reset.

TBD is now completely black. However, the power and peripherals all work - on my MBP. Power, sound, camera all functioning. Sys Info shows the TBD, but the screen is black.

Tried plugging in my girlfriends older Macbook - nothing at all. Power worked, but no display, no TBD in Sys Info, no peripherals.

My warranty is expired, and I have no desire to pay $30 to tell Apple on the phone that they bricked my TBD with the firmware update. Is there a way around this, or am I going to the nearest store?

UPDATE: the logic board was fried - but the USB cable trick still works!

Add me to the list of the bricked Thunderbolt display following the 1.2 Firmware Upgrade. I've followed the basic troubleshooting with no success. Off to the Apple store this afternoon.

Yesterday my TBD was picked up By a courier service to be delivered af Apple service centre in Ireland. Today it arrived and will be looked at by an Apple service engineer. I will post once I know their findings and proposed solution. Sofar I'm not complaining on Apple's pro-active attitude towards the problem. I trust it will be solved.

Just received confirmation from Apple they will ship a brand new display to me. Thumbs up as far as I'm concerned.

I have fixed the problem using thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable. So it seems that firmware update broke build-in thunderbolt+power cable. In any case at least display is not brick for now. Try, may be it helps you.

My Thunderbolt Display was also bricked after installing the 1.2 update, but the technicians at the Apple Store refuse to acknowledge that it was caused by the update and will not cover the repair. My warranty expired about 2 months ago. Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck trying to escalate the issue with Apple phone support. Anyone have suggestions about how to get this covered? Thanks!

I was able to have a conversation with an Apple Support tech. that scheduled an appointment for me to take my TBD into the Apple Store. To my surprise and appreciation my TBD is going to be repaired by Apple at no cost. I recommend you to call Apple support again and hopefully you a different Tech. Explain your situation and kill them with "kindness" .  If you go back to the Apple Store - do the same thing! Try not to put the fault on Apple (even though it is!) and work with the tech to find a common situation. Best wishes!

Thank you for your reply. Kindness and respect is my modus operandi too. Hasn't worked so far... but I'm not ready to give up.

Hello, yesterday I did apply the firmware update V1.2 to my 27 inches Thunderbolt Display but now the image on the monitor flickers from time to time and the image shows just like if it would have been affected by static electricity or an electromagnetic field (before anyone asks, NO there is no other electric or electronic device nearby and it was never before, also never before the monitor did suffer from this, actually it was working flawlessly before the update ) I am pretty sure this was because of the new firmware 1.2 applied to the monitor and I know for sure I can't downgrade to a previous version so I am pretty worried and mad about this, the monitor is out of warranty... I just hope Apple may be working on a new firmware right now to correct this !!! but I know Thunderbolt Display firmware updates are pretty rare Has anyone experienced something like this ?
