Could you please give more information? What were you doing when this happened? Did you drop or otherwise damage the device?

No it wasn't dropped or damaged, I was simply trying to pull the control center from my home screen, since it wasn't working I rebooted the device, when it came back on and it got to my lock screen it was in black and white, control center works but have not been able to get it back in color, even after several reboots.

I would back up and restore the software. If that doesn't help try restoring as a new device. If it continues, your device is under warranty, so take it to the Genius Bar to have it evaluated (make an appointment first).

First try a reset of the iPhone. Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button continuously until the Apple logo appears. Then release the button and let the device restart. You will not lose data doing this. It's like a computer reboot.

If that doesn't work try the back up and restore that AmishCake suggests. Still no luck? Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

I think you have accidentaly turned on the "Grayscale". Go to Settings, General, Accesibilty, and turn the "Grayscale" off.

I'm using an iPhone 5s running on iOS 8.1.3.

Just yesterday and for no apparent reason my screen went black/white. I tried all the suggestions in this thread-short of going to a Genius Bar or backup/restore- to no avail.

By fumbling around I lucked into a solution.

I triple tapped the home button and un-checked the "zoom" option and color returned.

For whatever reason- I'm assuming a bug- toggling the "zoom" option changes the screen from b/w to color (Zoom on=b/w; Zoom off=color).

Interestingly, turning on/off the Zoom in settings>general>accessibility>Zoom (under the "vision" heading) does the same thing.

Colin's Post did it for me too. Awesome stroke of luck! Saved me hours of headaches. Thank you!

Colin is a genius.  Thanks for this tip.  It worked and turned the screen to color again.  Does this mean I no longer have the zoom option unless I want a black and white screen?

Also, try triple-tapping screen & selecting "none" from the "choose filter" option in the menu. It took me hours to figure out that I'd inadvertently turned the "grayscale" filter on while the screen was unlocked & in my pocket.

I'm also using an iPhone 5s whose screen had changed to Black & White (monochrome, greyscale).  Colin1069, your fix helped me too.  But afterwards, I also had this little movable window stuck on my screen.  I triple tapped the screen to bring up the Zoom Window and Window Zoom had been turned on.  This allows you to see portions of your screen while zoomed.  BTW, when "Full Screen Zoom" is an option from the menu, this means if you select this option, it will be active so when you see it, "Full Screen Zoom", it's in Window Zoom mode.
