Q: Random Blue Screen Crash with 5S and iOS 8.1

Since upgrading to iOS 8.0 my iPhone 5S randomly gets blue screens and then crashes and goes into a loop of boot up, blue screen, reboot, blue screen, reboot...etc. My 5S did this again today when during my upgrade to iOS 8.1 via USB and I was forced to do a factory restore on it. The blue screen is still occurring after the restore and 8.1 upgrade. Is this a known issue? I was hoping this was going to get fixed with 8.1 but unfortunately, it doesn't look like it has.

    I have the same problem during the 8.1 upgrade,I have an Iphone 5s 16 GB

    Same problem, Tried hard restore using the USB and DFU mode, no luck.

    After every 5 minutes phone goes to restarting mode.

    It was clear that the constant rebooting (and occasional blue-screen) was a hardware problem.

     

    As my 5S was still under the 12 mo warranty, I went to a local Genius Bar after setting up an appt., and received an exact replacement. Very pleased with the service, as they had an unlocked model 16GB 5S in gold, and a single trip (about 30 min total) I got everything taken care of. Kudos to the Apple store in Arlington VA (Clarendon)!

    I resolved the problem contacting customer care,they told me to update from itunes and it runs!

    everything i've tried... same results

    back to blue screen and restart cycle

    Hi,


    try the following:

     

    Without connecting the iPad/iPhone open iTunes and delete all apps from your app library.
    Also delete all apps from your hard drive (iTunes Media/Mobile Applications).

    Restart iTunes and connect the iPhone/ iPad


    Now sync and backup your device. Did it twice and it seems to solve the issue.

    I already solved it..

     

    after everything i've tried, i change my battery to the new one.

    no more blue screen and boot loop.

    so the problem is on my battery....

    Tried everything i have read, DFU mode, still no luck. Worst still..no more warranty.

    I had the same problem. Plus it crashed during restore in dfu mode. I took the phone to the store. They said it was a hardware problem. They gave me the option to buy a new phone at about half price. I just went back to my 4s and didn't update to iOs 8. Since my 5s was useless, I experimented...I thought the problem was due to overheating. Stuck the phone in the freezer for an hour. Then it worked. It's still useless because I don't live in 0 degree weather. (Don't freeze your phone though.) See if they offer a replacement.

    HI,

    I just realized that there is a difference between DFU mode and recovery mode. And I thougly previously I thought DFU = Recovery mode, I was wrong.

     

    And, once I managed to on my iphone 5S, I immediately put it tthrough DFU mode. And it has been over 24 hrs now and no sign of "Blue Screen Of Death" syndrome.

     

    Those of you still having this issue, please give it a try.

     

    Method 1 as per the description below worked for me.

     

    I paste a write-up from the web for your reference:

     

    DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode is not the same as restore mode. DFU mode bypasses the current OS installed and allows you to upgrade or downgrade your OS. If you are getting errors trying to restore in iTunes, DFU mode is very likely for you.

    DFU mode is not recovery mode. Recovery mode has a picture that says connect to iTunes. In DFU mode, the iPhone screen backlight is not even on and the display is blank. If you have anything on your display you are not in DFU mode.

    This is how to achieve DFU mode. You can do it on every phone:

    Method 1)

    • Attach the phone to the pc
    • Turn the phone off
    • Hold power and home together for *exactly* 10 seconds
    • Release power but keep holding home until the pc beeps as a USB device is recognized.
    • At no point will the display come on. Now your restore should work.
    Having problems? Try adjusting the 10 seconds to be slightly less like 9 seconds, then 8, then 7. It’s a tricky timing but you will eventually get it.

    Method 2)
    • Hook up the phone powered on to the PC
    • Now hold home / power until the phone turns off and keep holding for 10 seconds. If the phone ever turns on during this phase,start over and hold for less time.
    • Now release  power and continue holding home until the PC recognizes the phone.
    • I don’t like this method as much because there are “rumors” that it may cause some 1604 errors in the restore. I am not convinced of that though.
    Method 3)
    • Attach the phone to the pc
    • Turn the phone off
    • Press and hold power. Keep holding power. As soon as you see display on the screen of any sort press and hold home.
    • Hold power and home together for *exactly* 10 seconds
    • Release power but keep holding home until the pc beeps as a USB device is recognized.
    • At no point will the display come on. Now your restore should work.
    Having problems? Try adjusting the 10 seconds to be slightly less like 9 seconds, then 8, then 7.

    Im having the same problem on my iPhone 5s also. It's running iOS 8.1.1. I updated via usb. And help.?.?. This is scaring me.

    As I posted before try the steps bellow. I have done that on 8 different devices. And it works great if you do it correctly.

     

    Without connecting the iPad/iPhone open iTunes and delete all apps from your app library. Very important! Also delete all apps from your hard drive (iTunes Media/Mobile Applications).…
    Than go to Itunes app market - all purchased apps (don't know exactly whats its called in english) and download all of them.

     

    On your iPhone do pretty much the same. Delete all apps and download everything from the app market you have ever purchased.

     

    This results in having PC and your Phone aligned! Otherwise you will get the blue screen again and again.

     

    Now you should be able to sync again.

     

    You can not sync your iphone and your ipad. Because your apps wont be aligned anymore! This work around only works for one device!

    HI Papapishu,

    Instead of downloading all my purchase apps ( could be more than hundreds), can I just download my current ones and ensure both

    my iTunes and iPhone has the same apps then I do a sync. will it work as well?

    Hi,
    I am not sure if that will work. I think the screen of death appears when Itunes is checking which apps need to be synced.
    If there is any difference at all your system will probably crash. Downloading all apps worked every time I tried.
    Maybe its a good idea to cut and paste your apps in a different folder on your pc. Then you can delete only on your pc AND itunes.
    Download all apps you have installed on your iphone to your iTunes library and give it a go
    (all apps need to be the current versions - update on your phone if necessary !)  


    Don't know for sure but is worth a try since you can't hurt the system any more

     

    Let me know if it worked out
