Q: Problems using 'Back to my Mac' with Yosemite

At home I have two Macs, an iMac and a MacBook, both running Mavericks. At work I use a MacBook Pro, also running Mavericks, and when I'm out I use a MacBook Air that was running developer preview of Yosemite.

My home iMac has now been upgraded to Yosemite. However when at work using my Mavericks MacBook I can no longer use 'Back to my Mac' to screen share back to my iMac, I get "Connection failed to "Conor's iMac", but I can still connect to the MacBook at home running Mavericks. I've also tried connecting to both Macs at home using my Yosemite MacBook Air but I get the same error.

I can screen share between all Mac when they are on the local network, but as soon as I'm using iCloud to screen share the only connection I can make is between Macs running Mavericks. It's almost as if 'Back to my Mac' via iCloud is broken in Yosemite.

I've tried disabling and reenabling 'Back to my Mac', signing out of iCloud entirely and then logging in again, but nothing I've tried so far will allow me to use iCloud to screen share between two Yosemite Macs.

Has anyone else seen this issue, or have any suggestions?

I'd also like to add that BTMM screen sharing over iCloud is still broken for me in OS X 10.10.1. Last time I tried using my MacBook to connect to my iMac back home it timed out. I then had to force quit screen sharing, then every other app froze up and it wouldn't even let me restart - just the bar at the top disappeared. I had to do a hard reset by holding power down on the MacBook and after reboot the iMac no longer appeared in the Finder sidebar. Yosemite is unstable as **** and I did clean installs on both my Macs!

To give more numbers to this thread, my BTMM stopped working as well over the internet after upgrading the machines to Yosemite. 10.10.1 made no difference. Filed feedback at www.apple.com/feedback like many other did.

    Hi all

I just installed Yosemite on my MacBook Pro and B2MM does not work when trying to access it from other my other Macs that are running Mavericks. All I get is a black screen.  I have had to dig out my old Timbuktu to be able to work.

We all share the same frustration and concern over this problem.  I realize you have spoken on this thread and others about this topic.  There doesn't seem to be a work around until Apple fixes it.  I guess the work around is downgrade to Mavericks until there is an actual fix to this problem.  Heck, I even turned off energy saver on my MM that runs Yosemite to see if I can access it on my MBA at work.   I understand it is a Yosemite problem.

    After a few days of trying to get BTMM working again I finally gave up and called apple for support. (2hours on the phone to apple) Heres how they ran through it;

Reinstall iCloud profile on both Mac Book Air and Mac Mini

Full Reset Airport Express and Airport Extreme

Click the BTMM button on and off a few times

Cleared out the keychain of all old BTMM profiles

Switch from @me.com to @icloud.com profiles on all accounts

They said it should all work just fine now after they referred to their notes

Tested it all out .... Still broken BTMM is just not working after the "Upgrade" - Prior to the upgrade it was woking just fine.

Can see the remote computer in the side bar - won't connect

Ive tried everything in the support pages here & spent 2 hours on the phone will apple and its still not working

I guess I have to stop saying that I  love apple because it just works.

As has already been stated several times in this thread alone, BTMM is broken in Yosemite and there is nothing for you to do other than wait for Apple to fix it.

The actions they had you perform amount to little more than voodoo. What was Apple's response when you called them back to say despite wasting two hours of your time, the problem still isn't fixed?

Spoiler alert: The only proper response would be that they are aware of the issue and are feverishly working on a solution. Call them anyway.

I have pretty much the same setup and same issue as mrbofus. I've upgraded but still no joy. Plex on my MacBook Air can see my iMac at home but BTMM is still not working. Definitely a Yosemite issue and the only solution is patience.

i made feedback to apple on this issue, btmm works great at home not from other places. I'm sure they will fix it. I still believe in apple even when crap like this happens

    Don't hold your breath.

Apple has still yet to fix the iOS 8 issue where photos synced from a computer get put in a random order on an iOS 8 device.  [ Photos out of order in Events after iOS 8 update ]

Apple has still yet to fix the iOS 4-8 issue where key photos from Aperture/iPhoto don't sync to iOS devices.  [ Key photo not working in iOS and Aperture ]

Just wanted to add another person to this thread. I can use either a Late 2008 MacBook or a 2014 MacMini as a home server. I depend upon wake on LAN and screen sharing to administer my home server. When the 2008 MacBook was running Mavericks, everything was fine. Then I "upgraded" the MacBook to Yosemite and screen sharing would fail after about 12-15 hours on my network. Wake on LAN still worked.

I purchased a new Mac Mini to use as a home server and a TV streaming computer--I though that the old hardware in the MacBook was the problem. The Mini can only run Yosemite. Same result...screen sharing fails after about a half-day up on my network. I can get screen sharing working again if I reboot my 5th gen Airport Extreme that provides our home network. But it only works for about a half day. I've also tried both long and short DHCP lease times.

I've connected the Mini to my network via wireless N and by ethernet and the result is the same. Even when screen sharing fails, the computer will wake on LAN and I can access files on the computer and on connected hard drives. It's only screen sharing that doesn't work.

BTMM also doesn't work in Yosemite but I don't use that very much.

Just to update the thread on my current situation. As many have now pointed out, the update to 10.10.1 proved to be a temporary fix. The ability to use screen sharing sharing over BTTM only works temporarily. I'm managed to get a couple of days usage before it fails at which point only a reboot of the target machine seems to help.

At this point I've simply given up using Apple screen sharing remotely. I'm now using Chrome's Remote Desktop app. It does require a Google account and a client to be install on the target machine so I appreciate this rules it out as option for many people, but it works, it works reliably and it has returned key functionality to me that the update to Yosemite broke.

I'll see what happens when the update to 10.10.2 is released, but now that I'm using Chrome remote desktop I haven't even bothered to install the developer beta of 10.10.2.

btmm works flawlessly with screen share and general file sharing on my home network with timecapsule router but is worthless when away from my home network since the developers were seeded with 10.10.2 five days ago I hope it will be out soon for the public I wish they would seed to the public beta testers so I give some preliminary results

Just adding a voice to the chorus.  I had a laptop running Yosemite, and Back to my Mac worked with my Mac Mini at home, running Mavericks.  As soon as I "upgraded" the Mini to Yosemite, B2MM completely broke.  I'm able to reliably connect at home no problem, but when I am away, it does not work at all.

Last night, following some of the discussions on this thread, I went to my AirPort Extreme and entered my AppleID credentials.  I also logged out of iCloud from my home server, and then logged in again.  Today, Back to my Mac has worked for me from two external locations.

I really shouldn't have changed both at the same time, because now I don't know which change was responsible for the fix.  Unfortunately it's difficult for me to test from a network outside my house, and I didn't want to have potentially another day during which BTMM didn't work.  In any event, one or the other (or perhaps both) of these changes has apparently made it work again.  For now anyway.

Please report back and let us know if BTMM continues to work for you.  Some/all of us have tried variations of logging in and out of iCloud/AirPort Extreme/computers/etc... and it always seems to temporarily fix the problem, but it seems to always come back.
