Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

TThat's not true at all. I have rang them loads of times. I have asked if they have read forums only to be told I'm not paid to do that. They finally emailed me and rang me after I complainabout this problem more than once

I had only posted here about it. A tech contacted me and asked to provide logs etc. He was very responsive and persistent about getting as much info as possible. I asked him how he knew to contact me. He said I had posted on the forums and he got my name from a list.

MAybe the the person you got was just a jerk.  Anyway the tech has been bugging me for more info. I can't give him anything cuz I worked around the prob.

My fear is they messed with the network stack because it's necessary for the 6. Then they can't roll back

When I installed iOS 8.0 on my iPad I got the problems with my AirPort Express (2nd Gen). When I went to work, the Internet connection worked fine.

So I went back to home and got problems with my internet access,  I ran against the clock to make the downgrade to iOS 7.1.2. Every iOS 8 update I visit this thread and I read that the problem still unsolved.

Hey Apple, make a simple test there. Try to connect an iOS 8 device with your own router. It will not work! Fix it and release an update.

    Thanks.

I, too, updated my iPad Air to iOS 8 within a couple of days of its release and experienced the wifi dropping that many on here have had. I, too, have been watching this forum hoping that each version of the updates will cure the problem, but not convinced so far. I have a BT Home Hub 5, and have not had wifi problems with any equipment (except those caused by BT itself!). I can' think the problem is other than the software. I have an iPad Mini,  MacBook and an iMac, as well as an iPhone 5S, so you could say I am an Apple fan   However, this latest issue has made me reluctant to buy the new 6Plus that I had my eye on - much too much to pay for a paperweight, as some have suggested. I hope Apple are monitoring this forum and will bring out a fix ASAP. I, for one, will keep looking to see if anyone has any solutions or prior knowledge of Apple releases, so please keep your posts coming.

    A grateful forum reader.

PS. I did manage to roll back to faithful, and working, iOS 7 just in time before Apple stopped signing and will stick with it for a little longer.

jsaidoo I had the EXACT same problem with my iPad 3 that you are having.

Apple has that iPad in their possession for analysis, read my earlier posts.

I've had similar experiences as Dan Woo, and he's right. They know, and they're working on it.

Dan Woo, you wrote: "Anyway im one of the lucky ones that managed to fix the problem through network hardware and messing with configuration."

Care to share what exactly you did?

Keep in mind that what fixed it for me, has been done by others and it hasn't helped.

    - I have an Asus RT56U wireless router. This has two SSIDs - a 2.4 and a 5 ghz.  Don't connect to these much as the device is in the basement next to the cable modem.  Connecting to these SSIDs had the problems we all have, but not all the time.

    - My xfinity cable modem also has two channels.  These have no range and I wish I could shut them off.

    - I had an Access Point on another floor - Linksys WAP54G.  Connecting here exhibited the wifi problem constantly.  This has one 2.4 ghz channel and was used the most.  This is a slower access point even when it worked.

    - So I have 5 SSIDs all with different names.  Channels were all set to auto.

    - I also can pickup several neighbors SSIDs off and on.

    - I first updated the firmware in my Asus router.  It didn't help.  Actually it got worse and I couldn't successfully connect at all with ios8.

    - I disabled the Linksys and connections to the Asus suddenly became much more reliable and fast with my iPhone 6

    - I enabled the Linksys again but changed the channel number.  The Asus continued to be reliable and fast.  The Linksys was improved but still slow.

    - I replaced the Linksys with a new Asus router configured as an AP only.  It's very fast. I can connect my ios8 devices to either Asus device now and very very little wifi issues.

FWIW I run 4 x Cisco waps in a cluster (all the came SSID and PW.) It worked faultlessly for years up until ios 8.1.1 and now I have the PW rejection problem usin WAP. Using WEP gets rid of the PW problem but its now so slow at handing off from one access point to the next that I'm on 3G half the time and not connected to wi-fi at all. Up until 8.1.1 it handed off fast enough for me to conduct a Skype call wandering from wap to wap without interruption.

Issues here, too.  Have two 2nd gen ipad mini wifi+cellular and two iphone 6+s all running on wifi in the house no problem.  Had two 1st gen iPad minis on ios 7.1.2 wifi only working fine earlier.

Upgraded to ios 8.1.1 on both of the 1st gen ipad minis, now neither gets internet connectivity.  I say that because they see the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks from my Asus RT-N66U router (latest commercial firmware) no problem and even connect and lease an address and can see the gateway (e.g., login to the router admin panel from safari on both of the ipad minis).  However, they can't get out to the internet...neither hostnames nor ip addresses work.

Found a workaround, though - I had an old AirPort Express 802.11g running v6.3 that I was using only for airtunes/speakers.  It's plugged in downstream via ethernet from my Asus router, NAT/DHCP on but wifi radio off.  I turned its wifi radio back on again, set for WPA2, and viola- both ipad mini gen1 wifi units were able to connect to it AND get out to the internet through the same router they were on earlier.  switch back to the asus - no dice.  back to the airport express, no problems.

I went one step further - if i put the Airport Express into bridge mode, (disabling NAT and pulling the IP from the upstream asus router), the ipad minis stopped working. When I put it back to 'share a public ip address' (enabling NAT once more within the already NAT'd upstream network), it started working again...

My bet is that iOS8 (at least on my 1st gen ipad mini wifi units), has a problem with NAT.  or maybe being double-NAT'd is somehow insulating it from a problem upstream? or maybe it only likes 10.x.x.x RFC1918 address space (what it is on my express vs 192.168.x.x on my asus)

dunno yet... but not happy about it.

I think you and London are on the right path. I have similar experience by extending an Apple network >> Airport Extreme to Airport Express (latest versions)

Connecting to the Extreme works fine. If I go to an area served by the Express, I get timeouts (I can join the network but traffic beyond the gateway times out)

If I move back to an area served by the Extreme, no problem, internet works fine. When I put these in Wifi roaming mode (both in bridged AP mode and a separate 3rd router for DHCP / NAT) - they work as expected. I also have success with (3) Ubiquiti AP's at work w/ no issue moving from one AP to another.

I am using the same SSID for both bands and Apple AP's. If I drop the Express and only use the Extreme, I have no issues with combined SSID on both bands. If I use another brand AP like ASUS, same thing, no problem. It only occurs when trying to access the internet through the AP Express doing the extension. I think there are several issues being discussed on this one thread but using multiple AP's in extender mode seems to be a problem introduced w/ iOS8.

Up through iOS7, this worked great. iOS 8.0 introduced a new bug and 8.1 / 8.1.1. have not solved the problem.  I will likely sell the Apple routers and stick with an ASUS since they put out more power and get me the coverage I need with one AP. However, ASUS seems to have their own problems with random timeouts. Very frustrating.

    ****

edit - I'll add that running two different SSID's is not a solution for me. I haven't had to in the last 5 years and don't want to now. It overly complicates managing my network.

Yes, I think ios 8 really dislikes roaming access points. I have two access points at opposite corners of the house (one upstairs and one downstairs) on non overlapping 2.4 ghz channels. Same SSID for seamless roaming. Always worked perfect but it's glitchy on ios 8. It does seem to jump to the stronger signal ok but I get occasional drops and it can wreak havoc with the AirPlay icon showing itself in control centre. I do remain convinced control centre/presence of AirPlay is responsible for slow throughput. But this is only on 5s whilst iPad seems to behave itself. Unfortunately apples wisdom to change it all about is totally to blame. I said it before but they should leave things that worked well alone.

..and of course, charged both ipad mini first gen wifi units to full and this 6 hours later with no other changes, they're now working fine.  We'll see if they continue to do so.

Sitting 20 feet from my newly replaced wifi router and using LTE because my iPhone 5 on iOS 8.1.1 constantly drops connection.  Never had any issues on iOS 7.  My wife's iPhone 6 has the same problem.  Just wanted to add to the list here so Apple is aware the problems continue even with 8.1.1 installed.

I just wanted to add. I decided to install 8.1.1 on my att iPad 3 and it has cut the link rate from 104 to 54.

All my other devices 2 iPad mini and android phones show a stable link rate of 104.

Shame on apple for not getting this fixed. I know I have bought my last apple product.

At least other os and hardware companies will say hey we messed up here is the patch.
