Q: iPhone 5 Mic & Ear Speaker Not Working

iPhone 5   … Running iOS 8.1

I'm having a problem with the mic and ear speaker on my iPhone 5.

Microphone Problem:

- Mic doesn't work when I make a phone call. So the person on other end doesn't hear me talking.

- However, if I change the phone call to speaker mode, I can talk to the other person fine.

- Mic doesn't pick-up my voice or audio when I make a "video" or when I use the "Voice Memo" app either.

Ear Speaker Problem:

- The ear speaker does not work when someone calls me or when I call them.

- However, the speaker near the bottom of the phone works when I play Pandora radio though, which is because it's a different speaker altogether (I think anyway).

I've also noticed that my apple brand ear plugs and mic doesn't work either when trying to make a call.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Having similar symptoms on iPhone 5 I just updated to 8.1 for my brother.

no voice transmission in either direction during a normal call.

all ok on speakerphone and plugged in headphones.

phone is not currently with me.

does anyone know if a restore will fix?

    thanks CK

ok, So I finally got an appointment with the Apple Store. Busy business. They told me that my ear piece was not working correctly and that it'd cost me about $40, however the mic was not working either. The microphone is irreparable, so I'm told. It was going to cost me $269 to replace my iPhone 5. I declined the offer, and upgraded my phone. Not exactly what I had hoped for. Nonetheless, still a proud apple iphone user.

    Hi

I had the exact same issue with my iphone 4. I also got the the exact same response from Apple staff at one of THEIR(not a reseller) stores.

I also declined to have the parts replaced and also declined to buy a new IPhone. (still have the same IPhone 4).

This is how I resolved it.

If you keep tapping the "Home" button (physical button below bottom of display) the running apps will appear.

Now slide those apps to the right so you see more coming from the left-hand-side of the display.

Keep going until you see a slider. This is your ear-piece volume control.

Adjust it to about 75% of the total.

Hope that works for you. (btw. I looked at a friend's IPhone 6 and could not find the running apps. They change where they are, I think)

    hope that helps

    Regards

My wife just updated her iPhone 5 from 7.something to 8.1

Now she can't hear from the ear piece but speaker works fine. (Haven't tried BT yet)

We tried the standard reboots and sliders to no avail.  It isn't hardware I'm sure of it.  I'm a Telecom Mgr by trade so I'm very familiar with Apple gear.

This is going to be an annoying day at the genius bar, I can see it coming.

If anyone gets any info on this, please post it and possibly save people from being given the scripted answers at the stores.

See this is an old issue, I'm still on my iPhone 5, since it has been great, and no need to replace, however ended top in the same scenario, my speaker failed, so went to a repair shop and got it fixed together with my volume bottom, 100 USD, and all was fine, after 2 days it failed again???, I thought this was not right, then dismantled the phone myself (I am a tech so it is easy) and stripped down the phone, inspected and checked the ear piece and all connectors, nothing same to be broken, since I did not have a spare ear speaker, I assembled all again. When restarting the phone the speaker worked fine again, however only for a day then it failed again. I also believe this is something to do with software, it is not a poor speaker or loos connectors, as I was particular to make sure they were correctly connected again and also secured with the locater plate on top. So still to find the magic trick!!!
