Q: Airplay peer-to-peer

I have been unable to get the new "Peer-to-Peer" airplay feature working.

 

The AppleTV website lists the following requirements:

 

"Peer-to-peer AirPlay requires a Mac device (2012 or later) running OS X 10.10 or an iOS device (2012 or later) running iOS 8 and an Apple TV third-generation rev A (model A1469) running Apple TV software 7.0."

 

I have an A1469 Apple TV as well as several ios and Mac devices that meet allo of the above requirements, yet none of them seem to be able to accomplish a peer-to-peer connection.  There is seemingly no option to enable or disable this feature in the most recent AppleTV software update.

 

Has any one had any luck getting peer-to-peer airplay to work, or is this feature just a myth?

    7.0.1 has now been released. Wonder if this solves the problems?

    It really doesn't solve anything... I have iOS 8.1 on all my devices and 7.0.1 on both of my ATV's but peer-to-peer doesn't work... Apple managed to screw every single thing on every single device they have...

    George, I don't really understand your frustration. The main point of Peer to Peer is to accommodate guests, and free you from having a dedicated Network router you must log into to stream form your devices.

     

    I can tell you right now that my company has 4 Apple TVs which we use to regularly stream from our Macs over our hardwired Ethernet network. Before iOS 8 and Yosemite, when clients came into the office, we had no way for them to use AirPlay from iPhones and iPads because they could not connect to the physical network, and our wireless guest network was on a separate subnet. Likewise for MacBooks. Only employees could access the Ethernet network behind the firewall, and the wireless network did not connect with the hardwired network.

     

    Thanks to Peer To Peer, our guests can now come into the office and stream directly to the Apple TV from a recent iOS 8 device without having to log into anything. It has made presentations so unbelievably simple. They can also bring in their late model Yosemite Macs and do the same thing without having to have a dedicated employee ID. Even better, they do not compromise the office bandwidth with high volume media streams. Likewise for those of us who use our Apple TVs like external monitors. We no longer have to compromise office network bandwidth streaming large media files to ATVs, while simultaneously streaming or downloading large multimedia files from the internet.

     

    Peer to Peer has a been a boon for my company for all of these reasons. It also makes sharing media contents with friends and family a breeze at home, without having to have them log onto my home network first. They just pull out their iPhone, select AirPlay and start showing me their pictures, videos and playing their music.

     

    So if you can't figure out a way to use Peer to Peer yourself, please consider that you may not use every feature on every device you purchase. But for many it's an amazing feature that works flawlessly for me personally and professionally.

    Is there anyway to DISABLE peer-to-peer airplay? I live in a group of small apartments and now some of my neighbours Apple TV's are showing up in my airplay device list. It is driving me crazy. Everything was so perfect, why did they have to go and force such a useless feature. At least give us the ability to hide peer-to-peer devices. Frustrated.

    For those that have not got the new Airplay working, try this. Settings - AirPlay - Turn on conference room display. I then got it working, but only with mirroring. Hope this helps

    I feel that this is so random, by now there is already couple of threads with people giving different solutions but non seems to work with my Apple TV, that's why I booked appointment with genius bar and will post back here what happened there.

    I Just bought my Apple TV yesterday. It was the rigth model A1469 but didn't work peer to peer. The software was 6.2 so I updated it (7.0.1)

    then I followed your instructions and it works great ! The step about restaring the Apple TV is a must. It dudn't work before that.

    works with my Ipod 5 and Iphone 6 but not Ipad 3. That is probably normal.

    I've tried all these suggestions, checked my set-up, reseted, everything is up to date, etc., & still can't get Peer to Peer Bluetooth to work...

     

    Why isn't anyone affiliated with Apple chiming in on this lengthy (& futile) thread with a fix? The experience here is a bit like the blind leading the blind. Surely they could have someone moderating issues when they reach this juncture...

    I don't know how can this help you guys but it worked out for me... I scheduled an appointment with Geniuses and once I got there they told me that I'm the first person that had problem with peer to peer or at least first one to report it. Before coming to genius bar I tried absolutely everything and I know what I'm doing since I'm teaching apple classes. In apple store they connected my ATV to their TV connected to Apple Store wifi, later on we disconnected wifi hard reseted my iPad and from there on it works... So, we did nothing special there, sorry guys...

    Lucky you CroMatt---i tried your hard reset & still my devices are undiscoverable via Bluetooth. I would really like Airplay peer-to-peer to work so as to counter the frequent WiFi signal interference i experience at trade shows but as i've often found with Apple over the years, the promise is often a tease :-)

    I purchased a new Apple TV the other day and could not get peer to peer working so went back to the Apple Store and they did a full restore as well got it up and running using my iPad Air 2 but on using it in our hotel room I find I keep getting an unknown error (3) message when trying to play movies or TV shows. Everything else works on peer to peer. Looks like another trip to the Apple Store tomorrow.

    Last night I did a full restore on my Apple TV that wouldn't work with peer to peer, then when it had finished I disconnected from the mains, plugged back in and peer to peer worked fine. I left another unit that wasn't working with peer to peer restoring last night. Again as it had restored ok I disconnected from mains, the reconnected and peer to peer works. I will try a third unit today, but I think that's the way to get peer to peer working.

    Did third ATV3 today, and that now works, so restoring and power cycling is the method. Be aware that not all content can be Airplayed directly, some content requires Airplay mirroring.

    Yes, I got this working in Yosemite using a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-in, Late 2013).

    We have an Apple TV A1469 running software version 7.0.2 (6915). We have been trying to use peer-to-peer AirPlay from an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 5s (both running iOS 8.1.1). We are able to get mirroring working perfectly, but when we try to stream an Internet video while mirroring, the AirPlay connection disconnects and Apple TV gives the error "Your Apple TV is not connect to the internet. Check your network settings and try again." Of course, this is a silly error message since an Internet connection is not required for peer-to-peer AirPlay.

     

    Playing video stored locally on the iOS works perfectly, and streaming iTunes radio worked. It's just streaming Internet video that won't work.

     

    We have tried all the suggestions on this forum, as well as others. Nothing seems to work. We have tried the following:

     

    • Playing video while the iOS device is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
    • Playing video while the iOS device is not connected to a Wi-Fi network (Wi-Fi enabled for peer-to-peer AirPlay, Internet connectivity over LTE).
    • Playing video from the YouTube app, as well as youtube.com in Safari.
    • Playing video from non-YouTube sizes through Safari.
    • Restarting the Apple TV and the iOS devices.

     

    As a side note, we got it working using a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-in, Late 2013) running OS 10.10.1. Video and everything worked as expected, though the connection seemed a little sluggish in its responsiveness to the mouse movements.
