Q: Airplay peer-to-peer

I have been unable to get the new "Peer-to-Peer" airplay feature working.

The AppleTV website lists the following requirements:

"Peer-to-peer AirPlay requires a Mac device (2012 or later) running OS X 10.10 or an iOS device (2012 or later) running iOS 8 and an Apple TV third-generation rev A (model A1469) running Apple TV software 7.0."

I have an A1469 Apple TV as well as several ios and Mac devices that meet allo of the above requirements, yet none of them seem to be able to accomplish a peer-to-peer connection.  There is seemingly no option to enable or disable this feature in the most recent AppleTV software update.

Has any one had any luck getting peer-to-peer airplay to work, or is this feature just a myth?

Update: Another error message we received on the Apple TV is "An error occurred loading this content. Try again later."

Al the new OS's destroyed my airplay capabilities. I never had a problem with Mavericks and iOS 7 and whatever version of the Apple TV OS was before this one. After a few minutes of air playing something from my macbook pro I inevitably get the stoppage of video, the "cannot load content" error on the tv and then when I try to start over I get the "cannot connect to apple tv" error on my computer. Its astounding how many problems across the board all these new OS's have. Its honestly steps back. All these new features are failing all over the place.

Thanks! This tip works fine for my iPhone 5s and iPad mini first gen!

just go to "settings", "audio & video", "tv resolution" and then change to 1080p HD - 60Hz.

After this change, both devices found Apple TV on control center.

II'm trying to make it works with my MB Air 13" 2014 running OS X Yosemite, but it show the message: " could not connect to Apple TV"

Were you able to stream Netflix / Youtube / Any video not already loaded onto your device after the change? That's the only thing I can't get working with P2P.

I just talked to apple and this is what they said:

To Airplay Peer to Peer an iOS device to Apple TV with no wifi / internet connection:

    • you can use peer to peer for content that's already on your ios device (videos, pictures, or music that you uploaded to your device)
    • you CANNOT use peer to peer for content such as youtube or netflix streaming from your ios device

So my new apple tv is useless for my needs. Really wish apple would make this more clearly in their description for peer to peer.

I found that if you want to view netflix from your iphone to your apple tv, you have to turn on bluetooth and select airplay, but most importantly click on the "mirror" option on your iphone. So technically you're not airplaying the content, but mirroring your phone to your apple tv without needing your apple tv to be on wifi. Now I can hook up my apple tv in my van and mirror netflix or any internet stream to my apple tv using only my iphone's data conncetion.

I managed to get BBC iPlayer working on peer to peer streaming last night. I had to use airplay mirror, but it worked.

Netflix still won't work, even with AirPlay mirroring.

The fact that I can stream with BBC shows that Netflix could work.

    This needs sorting out!!!!!

I've purchased the Apple TV today so that I can mirror my iPhone 5s when both devices are not connected to a network using the peer to peer facility when I'm out and about. It is the model A1469 and I connected it to a network first so I could update the software which is now version 7.2. I then forgot the wifi network, both on the Apple TV and on my iPhone 5S. I made sure that Wifi and bluetooth were switched on on both devices. The airplay was not showing on my iPhone 5s (which has the most up to date software available), only the AirDrop. After reading the thread I restarted my Apple TV and the Airplay option has now appeared, but it is not finding the Apple TV, it only shows the iPhone with a tick. Please can anyone advise before I take it to the Apple shop or throw things at it out of frustration?
