Q: itunes is currently unavailable

My Apple TV 3 has been playing up for a few days, possibly since the latest update - not sure.

Basically, i can no longer play any purchased TV/movies or iTunes Match music via the Apple TV (still fine via my other Apple devices - Mac, iPad 2, iPhone 4S) and the following message appears, accompanied with a black screen and yellow triangle "iTunes is currently unavailable. Try again later."

I've searched the forms boards and found a bunch of possible solutions that haven't worked: reset and/or restart Apple TV, Sign out and back in to iTunes on both the Apple TV and my Mac, switched Dolby Digital from Auto, On and Off - nothing has worked.

Could this be an Apple server authentication issue? On purchased movies and TV, it's at the authentication stage that things seem to stop.

Any help/advice would be hugely appreciated. Right now, iTunes Match and Apple TV aren't doing the job I paid for.

I have been having this problem for just under a week now. Maybe since the last update. I've tried: turning off n taking cables out, restarting, resetting and restoring Apple tv. I've tried restarting my network. All my other laptops, PCs and Apple gadgets work fine. I can watch and listen to all my films/music on everything except Apple tv!  It is extremely annoying when I've bought 96 films n can't watch them on my TV.

Can can anyone suggest anything that I haven't tried yet please?

    thanx D

It appears to be a problem with Apple so there is nothing you can do. As a work around you can download your purchases to a computer running iTunes and then stream to your appletv using Home Share. It's a hassle but it does work.

I Don't know if anyone has tried taking their Apple TV to another location to try or seeing if they can play their purchases on someone else's Apple TV or at an Apple Store.

Having the same problem here just outside of Chicago - same timing as everyone else. Purchased Guardians of the Galaxy last night, the iTunes Extras work fine but the movie will not play. Stops just after "authorizing" and says "itunes is currently unavailable. try again later." No other saved cloud movies work - same behavior.

I tried connecting my AppleTV to another wifi network using my iPhone personal hotspot as the router. Still had the same problem.

Apple has admitted its an account problem.  What your suggesting is an ISP problem.  We know that's not the problem because everything works just fine on iPads and PCs on the same network.

Just got off the phone with apple and its a company wide problem.  They are working on fixing it, but there is no fix yet and they don't know when they will have a fix for it.....

Tried to Airplay content from iPad to Apple TV but ran into the same issue. Will try the Home Sharing option later. What a pain.

Reset settings, restored, reset router, used phone as hotspot, airplanes from MBP, iPad, and iPhone. Every new update brings more issues these days. Where's Scott Forestall when you need him?

yes. same thing. i've tried resetting, restarting, etc...it's apple, it started after i took the latest update.

they're definitely doing a poor job of communicating/acknowledging the issue.

they need to ship a patch asap...after all it's thanksgiving...they're missing some good revenue opportunities here.

    Hey Whizzo

    This may help:

    1 Go to Settings/Airplay

2 Check option "Play from iTunes in the Cloud". Switch from Auto to Off

You should now be able to stream iTunes purchased music and iTunes Match music from your iPad to Apple TV as a fix until Apple find a solution to the Apple TV issue. With the iTunes in the Cloud option switchex to Auto, your iPad will hand over responsibility for fetching music from the cloud to your Apple TV. So you're back to the same situation as asking Apple TV yourself to play the song.

great solution to music problems  Home sharing still works too so you could go for that via your  computer
