Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

"I honestly think they do care, but there's a corporate policy to never admit to or discuss any problem publicly . That's the rather infuriating issue."

Perhaps Apple picked up that policy from politicians... they also rarely admit that they made a mistake or that there is a problem with their policies. It is a terrible way to deal with people... It comes across as arrogance. It also appears that Apple is not concerned when its customers are having problems with its products.

Health care providers have a reputation for similar behavior. But recent studies show that when doctors admit that they made a mistake and apologize, patients are much more understanding and less likely to sue. Apple could learn something from that...  You state that you think that Apple does care. If that is really the case, the corporate policy should be changed. Until that happens I see no reason to give Apple the benefit of the doubt.

Just wanted to add: I have one router (ASUS RT-AC66U) with separate SSIDs for 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz.  No other extenders or APs in the house (I had one, but turned it off to see if that was causing issues).  I can connect at greater distances to the 5Ghz network, but I see significant performance drop and frequent connection drops the further I move away from my router (even though it reports full signal).  More than 3-4 meters from my router and I cannot connect to the 2.4Ghz at all (invalid password).  If I connect to 2.4 and move away from the router, my iPad stays "connected", but I get very slow to no internet for a few minutes, then the connection drops.

Every other device in my house (iPods running IOS 7, iPad running IOS 7, Android phones and tablets, DVR, DVD players, TVs) all connect just fine.  My iPad connected just fine until updating to IOS 8.  Heck, even my Surface RT (don't ask) connects and runs fine!

I've tried changing channels for the 2.4Ghz network, factory resetting the router, flashing the router firmware, resetting all network settings on the iPad - nothing seems to work.

I have an iPad 2 that I've had for about three years and I recently bought an iPad air thinking the faster processor and chipset would make it better experience – I was wrong. I have had nothing but problems with my new iPad air. Slow and sluggish graphics slow Internet and keyboard lag have made me wish I had saved my $800 and just stuck with my iPad 2.I spent a half a day today with technical support that made me reinstall all the software and firmware which did not help at all. I can pick the same search in with my iPad to and my iPad air and when I click search the iPad to the page is fully loaded while on iPad air the thing is just spinning around and around in circles up there in the corner and the page never loads....and more deceiving is the fence iPad message this says the server is not responding when in truth it is an iPad failure and has nothing to do with the server.Apple should be ashamed and publicly announce these problems and that they are working on them to fix them while in the meantime we are all struggling with this sloppy rollout of the new iOS.

ive now tested at other locations - exactly the same with the iphone 5 password error on 2.4ghz networks. Iphone 6 does not always display the same issues with speed though.

going back to the wireless interference - from sitting indoors with both phones yesterday and doing a few tests with devices near / far from the iphone 5 I now do not believe that it is other ssids that are causing the drops / password errors. Why?? If I turn off other devices (clients) throughput increases, if I access (5ghz) safari on both iPhones next to each other they both take a long time, moving a device away (out of line with router) then speed increases Drastically.

MAybe it is something to do with airdrop in control centre and connection end points not 'keeping alive' and instead roaming as if looking for another device for sharing purposes - this could also explain the incorrect password error with packets going to the wrong device. Is it just a packet header problem? I don't know enough about the wireless authentithication method to test.

if anyone knows of some djags I could run to check this I will test.

I agree... I don't understand why Apple doesn't make it an option for people experiencing problems. I suspect it's so Apple can release data to the press crowing about how many devices have been upgraded to iOS8.

That wouldn't explain why the vast majority of customers don't suffer any degradation whatsoever; very strange.

For some reason, this site deleted Caracos reply about another site's observation of WiFi conflicting with another feature on iOS devices. Why would message be filtered out?

They removed my post because according to them, I've made a reference to iOS jailbreaking. If anyone interested in the findings, they can Google:

"AWDL ( Apple Wireless Direct Link) Bug"

Caracos. Well, it's nice to know that this thread is being monitored. I think that site has a legitimate theory of what may be going on and could help Apple target his assumptions.

TThere is nothing illegitimate in my post - I only refer to jailbreakintg and do not reference links - stop trying to cover your own mistakes using the hush hush technique.  The more they get deleted - the more they get posted around the web

    great post Caracos

Apple: you prevent downgrade to stop people jailbreaking - fair enough there are arguments on both sides. Personally I used to jailbreak every device - not for piracy but for tools and customisation.  You really need to have a long hard think about this policy though - Jailbreaks are routinely available now, much more than they used to be (albeit only software), so more people can anyway, they are also much easier applied - single exe's for example instead of custom ipsw's etc.  however, when issues like the ADWL bug occur (and this has been around for 2 months now) you lose thousands of people (generous amount, probably alot more) to the other side as, as always happens the 'hackers' / 'devs' / 'coders' etc etc etc always find a workaround (maybe not a fix always) streets ahead of yourselves. This allows users to use their devices again, they are happy they no longer have a £500+ paperweight because YOU (Apple) broke it. Due to them being happy, that jailbreak doesn't get removed, and the next device, and the next, and the next also get jail broken. They then tell their friends, boom, jailbreak explosion. I see it all too often, and most of these WILL pirate apps once they know how.

THe jailbreak scene continues to grow.... All because you will not allow a downgrade / roll out an optional update to temporarily disable the features causing the issue.  I for example will never use airdrop so disabling this would have no impact on me, instead I am forced to jailbreak again to be able to use my device.  My friends , family etc etc will also end up doing the same.

DRop the stubborn act and listen to your customers - you will sell more, retain more and get good publicity.  More to the point less people will jailbreak over time.

OH and one last thing - please rectify the predictive text that is also now broken - note the double CAPS at the start of paragraphs - I got tired of correcting it eventually.

wondering how you rolled back to version 7 from 8.  My mini wifi has not worked right since going to 8, have not gone to 8.1.1 and don't plan too.  Afraid I will mess something else up.  I have an expensive doorstop

NNever mind the forbidden topic on that site.  That guy presents a very compelling analysis of the problem.  I sure hope Apple is looking into AWDL.

ALso, I didn't bother to change the busted double letter and double capitalization problems at the start of both these sentences.

This is an Apple support community, but Apple are not supporting this community. There is a fix available for ALL of us with useless wi-fi which Apple refuse to give their customers, instead they remain silent and uncaring.

GIve us the choice - a return to 7 for wi-fi heaven!
