Q: iPad Air WiFi (5GHz) issues after iOS 8 upgrade

After upgrading to iOS 8, my iPad Air only has a stable connection at 2.4GHZ; using 5GHz causes it (Safari amongst other programs) to hang and lose internet (but not necessarily the wifi link).  Fortunately, I can set up 2 SSIDs on my router and so 'force' the 2.4GHz connection, so I can still use the device.

The iPad's internet link worked perfectly well before the upgrade, so I'm assuming it to be a software/OS issue, not a router one.

Are others having the same, or similar problem?

Has this happened with previous upgrades?

Is there likely to be a software fix for it?

I have the same WiFi issues as all of you. I lose Internet connection (but still connected to WiFi) after my iPad Air 2 running iOS 8.1 goes to sleep/standby. I've tried all of the suggestions and temporary fixes and none of it works. I took the iPad Air 2 (only a week old) to an Apple Store and explained the problem. they stated that nobody else has complained of these issues. I mentioned that the Apple.com Discussion pages are filled with complaints.

Either way, they swapped my iPad for a new one. Took it home, restored from backup and I am STILL having the same WiFi issues. This is definitely iOS 8.1 software related. An update is needed.

By the way, I am using a Linksys EA4500 wireless router that never had an issue with previous iPads or current wireless devices in my home network.

Just to let you know I upgraded to the Asus RT-AC68U last weekend and have been running my Air 2, 6 Plus and 5S perfectly now for a week without any wifi Issues.

These are all on the 5Ghz network and working at full speed.

NO problems with kindle fire hdx what on earth are apple doing to rectify the wifi dropout problem. Kindle 25% of ipad cost yet has much better wifi connectability.

PLease will someone at Apple do something about it........Quickly......before all respect is lost

Found my solution and want to share with you.

my solution was found after reading gazole reply about ios8 NEW iOS ibeacon feature.

I live at Brazil and have a lot of Apple devices (iPad 1/3/Mini, iPhone 3G/4/4S, MacbookPro 13"/17", Time Capsule) and like all of you this issue makes me very annoyed.

    I updated my iPad 3 (Wi-Fi) to ios8.1.1

Made all ios fix suggestions (disable wi-fi networking and others) but still couldn't use wi-fi at 5Ghz N band ( I can log in but can't navigate). It can connect to 2.4GHz as usual.

then I read gazole's about local ibeacons related issues post  (but didn't made beacon interval setting change as he wrote) and changed my router (TP-LINK N750)  5GHz wireless setting:

ONLY MADE ONE OF GAZOLE'S SUGGESTIONS ON MY ROUTER (NONE OF OTHERS AT GAZOLE'S POST)

    Region setting

    BEFORE: Mexico

AFTER: Brazil (you need to change to your actual country)

    and rebooted the router.

now I can connect to 5GHz and navigate normally.

I didn't test if was the reboot or the region change (or the both) that made effect (because I don't like to give chance to bad luck =P ) but it resolves my problem.

If your region is still set to USA and you live at USA, you can try to use other country and reboot and still back to USA again and reboot.

Hope and pray for you to find the same solution.

Thanks for gazole and all of members of this thread.

    See ya

just add another information: my Beacon interval was set to 100 as default, I never changed it.

people that use 2.4GHz wi-fi band willl not experience this issue but I encourage them to fix REGION settings too from now to avoid future iOS features.

I have the same problem with my iPad 3. Wifi connection very poor and unstable. So annoying! I hope they fix it eventually. Just thinking that maybe they want me to get a new model.

Macfanta...........and you will have the same problem with the newer models. Read the previous replies in this thread. Many users of iPhones and iPads of all models using iOS 8+ or higher are experiencing the same issues.

Just adding a post to this thread wondering if anyone else who posted about the original issues of wifi and the 8.0 patch were starting to see issues popping up again with the 8.1.1.1 patch?

It feels worse than the original 8.0 patch for me. No amount of reconfiguring my router or my ipad seems to help. Takes 30+ minutes to actually connect to the internet. And then if you close the ipad and pick it up later, it takes another 30 minutes before it connects. Brutal.

I Have a Netgear wndr 3400 dual band router.  After trying everything in settings, I disabled 5ghz and my Apple devices are now working on the 2.4 ghz only.  I have 2 IPad air 2s, iPhone 6 plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5 and other non Apple devices.  I finally figured out it was an iPad (Apple) error when I dropped the Internet while watching a movie being streamed with a g adapter (rocky).  I also lose the wan connection while maintains the lan.  It is very disappointing to have these devices that are defective. I am not against returning them all, but I would like to see a solution.

I had the same issue with my iPad air circa 2013 after updating to ios8. It would connect after restarting or turning wifi on and off but couldn't keep the connection. Every time I would lay my iPad down for more than a few minutes the issue would return. I finally did figure it out though, thanks to Amazon Prime of all places.

Here's the solution: Go into your wifi settings for your internet connection and select the little blue i to the right of your internet connection. Change the HTTP PROXY setting to Off. That solved my problem permanently. I haven't seen this solution elsewhere. Worked like a charm for me.

I Have the same problem as you after upgrading to Ios 8 series.  Have tried all he same things that you stated and also bought a range extender.  It still drops off even though I am within 6 feet of it.  My wife's Ipad has no problem as I did not upgrade her Ipad to Ios 8.  Can't believe Apple will not admit they have a problem and fix it.

Hi displacedgothamist, are you still using  2,4 Ghz. for your wifi? I'm asking because we're experiencing the same problems here with iPad Air and 5Ghz wifi.
