Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Seems like I'm in your boat in this instance, frustrating and helpless.

I have filed a report to Apple as was suggested by a number of high profiled 'Apple experts' on this forum, however, no response whatsoever.

Likewise, I filed a report days ago and have heard nothing.  Nor do I expect Apple will say anything. They'll try and sweep it under the rug as usual.

Best we can do is share this forum on social media so people know it's here, and hope we get enough numbers for Apple to pay attention.

Great stuff. lets hope some of the high points people get stuck in but their relative absence from this thread really tells me, sadly, that they suspect there is nothing we can do at the customer end, its up to Apple...

My update: the BT 2.4, 5GHz separate naming is half working this morning: can still connect on the 2.4 bw without any request for a password but on the renamed 5GH it was back to the password request/invalid password.

BUT something new: I alt clicked on the 5gh network in the wifi list and received a different "password required" dialog box but this time it said a WPA2 key was needed AND that this must be exactly 64 hexadecimal characters.  On the default settings card and the hub itself there is no 64 HD key of any sort

Good idea, going through Social Media. Will let my friends know. Sooner or later Apple will react (only switched to Apple 2 years ago, 1st was great, know have the feeling that I am back in the Windows world... with Beta Software not working properly and endless very technical discussions but no solutions in sight... maybe Windows 10 will everything ;-)

    Hello,

Just I want say again my "trick" this does not fix the problem and I am waiting and waiting and waiting a fix from Apple but I can use Internet by WIFI.

So, in Finder I select Air Drop (left side of Finder) and this one stay always open, if I need another Finder I do not close Air Drop but open a new Finder using File and New Finder Windows.

With this solution I have internet by WIFI and stay connected.

I believe this trick can work for you, this is not the solution should be fix by Apple the question is WHEN ???

    Good luck

I really hope this isn't done on purpose to "encourage" us to upgrade our hardware. Guess we'll know soon, whether they fix this or not. Can't be that difficult to fix surely?

    Who can say.

All I am certain of, and as a fairly recent Apple convert (2012), is the Apple experience is no where near as perfect as the company and it's fanatical fanboys make it out to be.

That said I wonder if the issue isn't hardware on the machine as much as the router I connect to. Currently while connected to public wifi my Mac has stayed connected for over an hour without me even touching it.

This suggests that the wifi router at home might be the culprit. The problem is Apple appear to be so concerned with controlling their reputation, that problems aren't allowed to be officially acknowledged in public, I can't find a way to supply the information they might need to fix the issue.

    Assuming they want to.

Just got off the phone with a senior advisor at Apple Support. He solved my problem. I had issues with my prefered network not becoming available after restart/sleep.

He simple guided me through this process: Remove all prefered networks from the list in Network/advanced. Shut down computer. When you hear the start sound, press and hold shift-key. When the loading bar shows, release shift-key. Voila, you will enter safe-mode. When booted up, connect to your preferred network. After connected to your prefered network, restart normally.

And that, solved my problem! My macbook air is again, a window to the world.

In short: Remove all prefered networks. Enter safe-mode. Connect to prefered network. Restart.

re:  In short: Remove all prefered networks. Enter safe-mode. Connect to prefered network. Restart.

I tried this. Did nothing to help me with my wifi connection. I could always get online through. My problem is wifi dropping to 10kps every 20 - 180  seconds. I then have to manually restart wifi to get it back to normal...for 20 seconds, or 3 mins if I'm lucky, then back to 1-10 kbps...disconnect wifi, reconnect, get another 30 seconds, etc etc.

And I have no way to connect my MacBook Air to ethernet.  Grrrr! Apple!

MY God, I have gone through every fix on this thread...absolutely nothing worked!

I get wifi, not only does it drop out, but when connected it is ridiculously slow, trying to watch something on AirPlay is now trying my patience to its limit, come on Apple don't let me down now after so many year spouting the virtues.

    PLease help.

Lets hope the solution sticks for you.  DO please come back on in 24 hours and let people know either way - still OK or not.

My problem was being unable to connect to a preferred network because my password was "invalid": running the soafe mode solution has let me login now (with the same password!) BUT it is very slow - slower than before when I could connect  It says Tx 300 mbps, noise fluctuating 49 - 62 - anybody know what that means?

Just switched from the 5ghz to 2.4ghz: tx rate almost exactly half - 145...

Maybe I should be glad I can survive for a while on ethernet and pray for a full solution from Apple.

    Good luck everybody

Hi again: this is my current status:

The problem has returned but/and now persists only when closing the lid on my MBA. My preferred network is not found.

If I then press menu/sleep (eg not sleep via closing the lid) my preferred network is found again. This is better than before, but in no way is the problem fixed.

For the record I should ad that I have never experienced problems with WiFi dropping. My problem was only and always one of preferred network not being found/not appearing in list.

I will repost as soon as said Apple employee has returned my message.

    Best

    Thomas
