Q: Sync iPod with iTunes: all movies recopied every time.

- iPod touch 5th generation with latest version of iOS (8.1.1)

- iTunes (12.0.0.140) on latest version of Yosemite (10.10.1)

- MacBook Pro 13" late 2013 model (8GB RAM, 256GB SSD).

Starting with iOS 8.0 I see an annoying problem when syncing media to the iPod. Almost all movies and TV shows gets recopied every time I sync even though I haven't touched these on either the MBP or the iPod so no play status needs to be copied.

Could it have anything to do with my Music folder being symlinked to an smb mount from a NAS box? This was working perfectly before. In addition to the above sync problem, if I copy files from apps on the iPod, for example DocsToGo, the files do not maintain the modification date but instead gets the file copy time as the modification time. This happens only when copying files to a folder residing in an smb mount. Doing the same to the local disk on the MBP maintains the original modification time on the files.

The only reason I'm using smb (CIFS) instead of AFP is because smb is case insensitive. I access the same folders from Windows 8.1 PCs on the same network and these will have problems when multiple files match, for example dsc00031.jpg and DSC0031.JPG match each other on the PCs. I can only access the first of these two files.

An update: I have now an iPhone 5s 64GB which also has the same problem - almost every movie recopied on every sync. I also migrated my Music folder from an SMB-mounted folder to a local file system. Still no change.

Downgrading to iTunes 11.4 and rebuilding my iTunes library from scratch doesn't help either. And the iPhone I'm using now was configured as a new device - not restored from an old backup.

So it looks like this is a problem in iOS 8.1 and 8.1.1. I will also downgrade my MBP to Mavericks to confirm that it's not caused by OS X.

Downgrading OS X to 10.9.5 made no difference. So it must be a problem in iOS 8.1.1. Further 'proof' for this is that when I connect my old iPod Touch 4 running iOS 6.1.6 the same problem is not seen; no recopying of already synced media.

Holding my breath waiting for Apple to fix this bug? No. Regretting trading my Asus PadFone Infinity 2 for the iPhone 5s? Yes...

Edit to above: the same problem with the iPod Touch 4 running iOS 6.1.6 actually. I connected it to iTunes without setting up sync of movies. It had some old movies remaining from previous use. Once I set it to sync new movies from iTunes, the same problem appears.

A quick workaround: set the option 'Manually manage music and videos' in the Summary tab.

I solved the problem - or more correctly, bypassed the bug in iTunes and/or iOS.

I have SD, HD and 1080p HD versions downloaded for most of my movies and TV shows. I had selected the option 'Prefer standard definition videos' in the summary tab in iTunes, to save space and fit more movies on the my phone and iPod. With the 4 inch screen of the iPhone 5s and iPod Touch 5 it doesn't make much difference if you're watching SD or HD movies.

After switching off this option in iTunes, movies and TV series are no recopied on each sync. Only one episode of a TV series were doing this. This I solved by removing and adding the episode again nto my iTunes library.

Same thing here... I have HD and SD version... When choosing the SD version... it copies movies over every time... VERY ANNOYING!!.... If I use the HD version, it does not repeat the copying every time...  but I want the SD version to save space....   any ideas?
