Q: Windows 7 partition gone after installing Yosemite

Hi!

I recently installed Yosemite (OS X 10.10) and now when I was going to boot my Windows 7 partition (by holding down 'alt' when booting) I realized that it's gone.

When I checked Disk Utility this is what I found:

Screenshot 2014-10-17 19.52.04.png

The Boot Camp partition is not there. But there's a new partition (Have not seen it before) called disk0s4 and it needs to be repaired. I assume this is my no longer working Boot Camp partition (?)

Should I just choose the recovery option when booting and use an back up from yesterday for the disk called 1TB HD? Or what should I do to get the Windows 7/Boot Camp partition back?

I'm using a late 2009 iMac 27"

iMac, Mac OS X (10.0.x), Late 2009

I don't know how to get a new thread. Yeah, I have two partitions for windows 7 pro x64. What I used to do was I installed windows 7 system on the partition BOOTCAMP which would be the local disk c: in win7, and I used partition DATA for other windows programs. Since windows is not as stable as OS , I can reinstall the windows when it is totally crashed without deleting other programs. The following was what I did :

    1. use bootcamp assistant to create win7 installation flash disk.

    2. reboot, hold command+R, use disk utility to wipe the whole disk.

    3. create three partitions, first two for windows, third for mac.

    4. install OS system on third partition

    5. after 4th. restart with flash disk plugged in, hold OPTION, then choose BOOTCAMP

    6. install windows on second partition.

This was what I did. I don't know if I did correctly, but it worked for one year and I could easily reinstall windows again and again.

So what I need to is run these commends ?

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

Hey I am having the same problem with my Windows 8.1 disappearing after updating to Yosemite. I did all of the commands, but don't know how to make a new thread. If you could help me with this, it would be awesome. I too have assignments due on programs only on windows. Thanks!

If you go to the Bootcamp Discussion ( Boot Camp) and in the Search box type a question, it will give you a choice of submitting it to the community.

    Dear All

    I have found the solution

You must install these programs 1- NTFS-3G and restart

2- TUXERA NTFS and restart your mac

now the BOOTCAMP should BE APPEAR

IF THE BOOTCAMP DRIVE NOT APPEAR AFTAR INSTALL THE PROGRAMS .... OPEN THE (( Terminal )) and Write

    sudo ln -s /system/library/filesystems/fusefus.fs/mount_fusefs/usr/bin/mount_fusefs

Then press enter .. now you must write your password .. when you write it it will not appear .. But continue and press enter.. then restart your mac and enjoy

Tuxera is a commercial product, and it works, if you already have a working NTFS volume in the first place.

This gap usually indicates a Yosemite issue. You will need Testdisk and GPT Fdisk.

If you can follow Missing Bootcamp Partition (with pastes!) it should be fairly quick to fix the problem.

Thanks Loner T. I followed the approach in the post you pointed but I still can't boot into windows.

The answers to the questions you mentioned in the solution post are listed below

Test 1 - Does Bootcamp Volume show up in Finder?  No.

Test 2 - Can you files in Bootcamp Volume? No.

Test 3 - Can you select Bootcamp in System Preferences -> Startup Disk? No. Only yosemite is there.

Test 4 - If Test 3 is successful, select Bootcamp and Click Restart.

Although I can't select bootcamp as startup disk in the system preferences, after pressing option key, I can see the windows drive. However, when I choose to start with it. it says disk error and press alt+ctrl+del to restart. It is more like what you said below.

"If you see a hanging underline cursor at the top left on a black screen, and it does not proceed further, you may need Windows Startup Repair or a tool called EasyBCD."

BTW, after the fix, the testdisk shows two warnings. I am not sure if the disk error is due to these warnings.

Did you run a Deeper Search in Testdisk and find familiar Windows files including System Volume Information? YOu still are at the Quick Search, which will show you what you currently have, but not the lost partitions in the gap.

Please backup your OSX and Windows and use these backups as baseline for future restores. Previous backups will contain incorrect volume information.
