Q: itunes is currently unavailable

My Apple TV 3 has been playing up for a few days, possibly since the latest update - not sure.

Basically, i can no longer play any purchased TV/movies or iTunes Match music via the Apple TV (still fine via my other Apple devices - Mac, iPad 2, iPhone 4S) and the following message appears, accompanied with a black screen and yellow triangle "iTunes is currently unavailable. Try again later."

I've searched the forms boards and found a bunch of possible solutions that haven't worked: reset and/or restart Apple TV, Sign out and back in to iTunes on both the Apple TV and my Mac, switched Dolby Digital from Auto, On and Off - nothing has worked.

Could this be an Apple server authentication issue? On purchased movies and TV, it's at the authentication stage that things seem to stop.

Any help/advice would be hugely appreciated. Right now, iTunes Match and Apple TV aren't doing the job I paid for.

I talked to AppleCare today, the operator told me that they are working on a software update to resolve this. So, I'll keep checking for it...

I, too, am having this problem in Massachusetts.  But I have also found a workaround that is at least making it possible to watch our movie collection during the holiday weekend while Apple gets its act together.

Workaround: I downloaded the movie onto my iPad, played it, and used AirPlay to get it onto my AppleTV-connected screen.  Slow and kludgy, but at least it liberated my movies so they could be watched.

Please, Apple.  Fix this.  I am missing my first-generation AppleTV that stored all the movies rather than streaming them.

Also having issue, it is ridiculous. Kinda defeats the purpose of having TV if you can't stream any content from iTunes since the change to no hard drive. Come on Apple, I think your better than this.

I have read on a couple forums that they suspect Family Share as the issue, does everyone have Family Share on? I for one do.

I've had the same issue for the past 4 days, I have two of these devices and both showed the same results so I was sure it wasn't my network as some forums have suggested.  From what I've read on here Apple is aware of the issue and is working on a fix, so it appears it's going to be a few days.

I did this last night with a purchase of a movie from iTunes. I downloaded to my Mac Mini and then streamed it via Home Sharing to the Apple TV under the "Computers" tab. Remember you have to download the whole thing first to your Mac and/or iPad/iPhone/iPod- Home Sharing streaming doesn't buffer in the same way as content streamed directly out of the AppleTV (since it only has 8GB of storage onboard). Once the content is on the device you want to stream it from, enable Home Sharing and it should show up in your "Computers" tab. Downside of doing it this way, aside from the eating of space on your devices, is that it takes a while to download an HD movie, so no instant gratification. On a 100Mbps download speed cable modem, it took 20 minutes (also because iTunes was delivering it to me at 17 Mbps).

Yes, I'm sure it's connected somehow with family sharing. After I turned it on, ATV stopped to play my purchased content. But if I login ATV with account I added to family sharing it plays my shared movies without problems.

I'm in so much trouble with my wife.  She hates tech and told me to only buy blu-rays.  But for the last two years I've only bought movies off of iTunes and its been great.  Then the Holiday weekend arrives and this happens.  I hope they get this fixed soon because the "I told you so" is going to get real old, real fast.  All the visiting family is saying, who doesn't keep a hard copy? I remember the original argument. It went something like this.

Me: "Honey you don't understand, the disc could get lost or scratched, your sister could borrow it and her dog might eat it.  If its in the cloud it's safe forever and Apple will watch over and protect us so we can have it anytime.  That's what they do. Keep us safe from harm and evil disc eating dogs."

Wife: "But sweetheart what if the cloud goes down or the internet goes out."

Me: "Ha Ha Ha, oh you are so naive my love, this is apple we're talking about. That's just crazy talk. You'll see! It will be alright"

Please Apple I beg thee.  Help me at least appear to not be the idiot, kool-aid drinking, apple loving fanboy that I am by fixing this quickly and helping me save face with my beautiful and now not so naive wife.

Solution!!!  Here's the workaround:  this issue is following our IDs so you can turn on family sharing, then go to Settings on your Apple TV and logout, then login as your family member's ID.  You're shared purchased content  will be available with their ID now so you can access and play it using their ID.

It works!  I tried it last night.  We watched my purchased content but my husband's ID is logged into Apple TV.

the other thing you can do is stream from your IPAD to your Apple TV.  I didn't do this because Family Sharing and logging into Apple TV with a different family member ID worked for me.
