Motion 4.0.3 is not compatible with Yosemite.

As the Final Cut Studio suite was officially discontinued in June 2011, no further consideration has been given by Apple to it's functionality on Mac OSX releases since that point.

You're right that Yosemite isn't compatible with Motion 4, though what I am wondering is where you read that it was "discontinued in June 2011."  I am well aware of more recent versions of the application, but I am aware of no indications that Apple is no longer supporting Motion 4.

Then there's the fact that Yosemite "broke" Motion 4, which worked just fine in Mavericks, which at least implies that Apple intends to restore its functionality.

I have noticed that Yosemite movies the Qmaster prefpane to the "Incompatible Software" folder, which implies to me that it's crucial for Motion 4.  If that happens to be the case, and if its functionality is restored, then so will that of Motion.

Motion 4 is old...3+ years old.  Not supported on the current OS.  Discontined, as mentioned.  MOTION 5, however, is current, and will work on later OS versions.  Just like Microsoft Office 98 is not longer made, nor supported, but Office is made, and supported.

You're missing my point.  Motion 4 isn't Microsoft Windows 98, and nowhere has Apple said it's not supported.

If I am in error–and it's entirely possible–please point me to a post where Apple said said so.  I understand fully well that Motion 5 would more than likely work, though as I said, Motion 4 worked as well till the Yosemite update.

And until I read somewhere that Apple has abandoned support for Motion 4 there's no reason to assume that its functionality cannot be restored.

Call Apple support, or go to a Genius Bar and ask for support for running Motion 4 on Yosemite and see what they say.

Next time I am at an Apple Store, I will.  That being said, I have encountered numerous instances where I have know as much–if not more–about a particular Apple-related issue than Apple Store personnel.

So I will wait for some acknowledgement from Apple that Motion 4 was abandoned–like what was done in the case of Aperture.

    Well, pack a lunch.

The pre-announcement of the demise of Aperture is a direct result of the debacle that occurred when Apple abandoned - and left to die - Final Cut Studio (of which Motion 4 is a part)  for FCP-X in 2011 without clearly pre-announcing their intentions.

While waiting for Apple, you can just pop the $49 for Motion 5 and get the supported version for Yosemite ( and will likely be supported going forward) or, if Motion 4 is critical to you - and ran well on Mavericks -  make a Mavericks boot partition so you can run it there?

NO software company announces they no longer support software.  They just don't.  And one can easily assume that once a new version of a piece of software is released, that the older version is no longer maintained nor supported..with few exceptions (Avid, while now on Media Composer 8, still releases dot versions of 7 and 6...because they have a wide client base that uses older versions).

Final Cut Studio 3 was fully supported up to Lion....10.7.  But it was discontinued by the time Mavericks was released. And when they discontinue software, that means they no longer test it on the new OS, nor do they take it working into consideration. Because they have new software moving forward...FCX, Motion 5.  Yosemite is two versions after Motion 4 was discontinued.  So they assume that, if you are going to move forward with your OS versions, you'll move forward with supported apps as well.

If you need the old apps to work, don't update your OS.  Maintain an older system with older OS to ensure they work properly.  If you move forward with OS versions, and newer computers that only ship with newer versions, know that your older software may or may not work.  This is true of ANY software.

Apple generally does not announce " this software is dead" (think Monty Python parrot scene). They simply announce the revolutionary new software and stop supporting the ancient software.

FCS 3 (aka Final Cut Studio 2009) has been EOL since 2011. The last officially supported OS was 10.6.8. That the whole suite ran on OSX 10.9 is great.  That most of it still runs on 10.10 is amazing.

If motion is important to you, spend the money for the current version. Otherwise, don't upgrade the OS. Or, get AfterEffects and pay the subscription (which is much larger than the $49 Apple wants for Motion 5).

I didn't read it anywhere - I wanted to pick up another copy but was told by an Apple Store manager that all remaining stock of FCS had been returned on May 31 2011 as they would no longer be selling it.

    >>...and nowhere has Apple said it's not supported.

Apart from removing any mention of it (with the exception of this forum) from the Apple web site in June 2011. Seems pretty conclusive.

Shane, Question...I too did the upgrade but didn't really need to, but once we upgrade to Yosemite, is it possible to uninstall the upgrade? Or go back to our older OS version so Motion will continue to work?

    thanks

Sorry, you cannot uninstall updates...or install older OS versions over what you have. The only way to go back is to backup your entire drive, and erase the system drive, and install the OS you want from scratch. Then install all your apps, and then bring back all your files.

This is why I always CLONE my operating system before I upgrade. In case I don't like it, or things break, I can always clone back.

Wait....can I partition my HD and install the old OS there and reinstall my Final Cut Studio there?
