Robert says "Yes, the best course of action would have been to not upgrade and lock your device into iOS 7 permanently".

    I couldn't agree more, Robert.

Within 24 hours of ugrading to iOS 8 I was online trying to find out how to revert back to iOS 7. I don't think it's ethical to refuse to allow users to revert back to a previous version of the OS if the new version is not working for them.

It's not fair to allow users who have simply not upgraded to continue to use iOS 7 while those of us who have been cooperative with Apple by upgrading to iOS 8 are not allowed to revert to iOS 7 and are penalized for our cooperation and forced to go through lengthy trouble shooting and diagnostic procedures with uncertain success to detemine why their iPads and iPhones aren't working properly anymore.

I can think of no technical reason why users shouldn't be able to back their systems up, wipe them clean and do a clean install of iOS 7. How would that hurt Apple anymore than simply not upgrading in the first place?

Almost any other product can be returned by the customer within 3 days if found defective or simply unsuitable by the customer. I feel that once we upgrade that

Apple is coercing us to continue using the product for their own purpose of trying to promulgate the new release. By using the product we have done nothing to wear the product out or make it unusable by Apple. But by Apple refusing to allow us to return the product and restore our iPads and iPhones to their previous condition we the users are experiencing real and tangible damage.

Besides the issues with the iPad mentioned in this discussion thread, people are having even more serious problems with their iPhones not being able to work in hands free mode in their cars any more. Hands free operation is a legal requirement in the State of California and a safety issue. I discovered the problems with the iPad while using Apple's own chat system to solve the problem with my iPhone. The chat system, running in Safari on my iPad, locked up and froze THREE times while I was with customer support trying to convince them to let me revert to iOS 7 on my iPhone. Not a good sign.

    If I were a stockholder - I'd be concerned.

Out shopping at the weekend and popped into an Apple Store to give it one final go!

Two iPad Air 2s running 8.1.1 - started Safari and loaded the same website on each, and guess what?!

    S-L-O-W...  P-A-G-E...  L-O-A-D...

    Account for that!

Did you try the same sites on any Macs, too, to see if it wasn't the intertubes, which seemed to slow to a crawl this past weekend.

I Bought an original iPad mini 2 years ago with ios6, never updated it, as all the apps I needed I had downloaded, and that was all I used.

The iPad worked absolutely perfectly for 2 years. I would often mention to family members that the iPad "just worked" and that I was perfectly happy with it and could not imagine using any other tablet; perfect size, loads instantly, slick, unique looking, just perfect. I also during the 2 years had multiple chances to try various android tablets that family members had, and would often compare it to my iPad mini, always content that the speed of the devices were nowhere near that if my iPad.

Obviously I would get the periodic alerts that there was a new update available on the IOS, but as the iPad worked perfect, I felt no need.

Anyway, 5 days ago whilst looking for some new apps I wanted, I was twice alerted that the apps only worked with IOS7+, and as IOS8.1 was just released I thought I would update, to get the apps, etc.

WHAT A MISTAKE I MADE UPDATING

Within hours I immediately regretted updating, with slow loading Safari (and yes, tried all the so-called 'fixes' to no avail), everything is just so sluggish (I have also tried formatting and resetting as new, still as slow, and buggy). I actually have an iPhone 5 which still has IOS6 on it, which no way on this green earth will I be updating it!!, but I have compared the speed of the iPhone to the updated iPad and the difference is staggering. Using my IOS6 iPhone is like an old trusted friend compared to the updated iPad.

I am so, so annoyed at updating, because I obviously cannot go back to IOS6, and I used to love this iPad, but now, I just do not enjoy using it anymore.

I also HATE the fact that just because I trusted Apple I now have an iPad that performs far worse than it did 5 days ago.

Before this update I was perfectly happy with Apple products, and could never have seen myself changing in the future should I ever be in need of a new device.

That view has now changed. I will be looking elsewhere in future. I am extremely disappointed in Apple, and their so-called 'professionalism'.

it seems now that we are just all being dictated to, or why else would Apple not allow paying customers to roll back operating systems to previous versions that worked perfectly. It makes no sense to alienate customers this way. This is MY device, not their's, so why am I being held to ransom.

What an absolute crazy situation this is..... My money will be spent elsewhere in future.

ready to throw this thing out the window.

    thanks for nothing APPLE.

I'll throw my hat into the mix as well.  iPad 3 here, 32gb WiFi version.    Updated to iOS 8.1.1, didnt use iTunes to do the update. Safari and Chrome are essentially unusable.  Safari locks up, and Chrome crashes a lot.   When I do Google searches in Safari, and attempt to click the hyperlink results, its as if I did nothing.  No response whatsoever.  Usually, if I continue tapping the link like a madman, after about a minute or so, the link will eventually load.  In the meantime, the little clock thingy on the top left will be spinning constantly.

Some sites such as dpreview.com, will completely lock Safari for 45-90 seconds, and when it eventually responds, it will lock up again in short order.  That mostly happens when I am looking at sample images on their camera reviews.  I imagine this is javascript intensive.   They have an Studio Scene comparison section where its a large image and you can click on a certain portion of that to see 100% crops and compare it to other cameras, that REALLY does a number on Safari.    If you wanted to try it, check this link out:  http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-lumix-dmc-fz200/8

    Cheers!

Original iPad Mini here. Suffered same problems early on. 8.1.1 installed fresh with restore of data from Cloud and banishing Facebook seemed to help.

The link you just sent opens in about 10 seconds from click to fully scrollable page the first time. About 6 seconds when I refresh the page.

Clicking in the image instantaneously updates the four images below.

Not sure if that's slow by your standards. Seems about the same as my desktop. Perhaps a little slower.

I am beginning to think the issue isn't Safari but something between iOS8 and some specific WiFi suppliers... there are some other threads about this if you are interested in pursuing it. For the record, I have Time Warner Broadband Extreme through a last generation Airport Extreme delivering 30meg down and 5meg up.

    Hi Bob,

On my iPad 3, that hasnt been my experience at all with that site.  It sounds like its working just fine on your mini.  I may need to give a total restore a shot because last night I was ready to toss the iPad into the trash    In regards to Wifi, I have AT&T 6MB down DSL & a TP-Link router which has always been fine in the past, but just in case, I tethered to my 4g LTE phone last night and had the same experience with that site.

I wish you luck. If you already have 8.1.1 installed, try this, just to see if it helps - and disclaimer - this stuff worked for me on two iPad Minis in the same household using the same WiFi, etc.

If you have it, delete Facebook App and (Facebook) Messenger app. Kill all apps from multifinder window. Power the iPad down and restart it. Run it for a few minutes. The single biggest thing that helped me was getting rid of the FB apps. I've not reloaded them to see what would happen. I did that BEFORE 8.1.1 came along. Killing FB did the most good. 8.1.1 seemed to pick up most of the rest of the slack.

I wish you luck and I wish there didn't seem to have to be so much voodoo involved with this.

I think you're on to something with wifi. Mine freezes often when I'm streaming the internet via optimum online. ios6 version was quite steady and it still is in ipad1. Glad I still have that one around.

Saw that 8.2 was in beta. All that I could find about it was it could be jailbreaked and it was for the iwatch. Is that's Apple plan to make people to have to replace a watch every year.?

    WiFi, HiFi, Safari, Chrome,

iOS 8 just leave us alone!

    Let's not get sidetracked.

There's a real and manifest issue here and I couldn't really care less as to the specific lines of code in the OS, or which other services, are causing it.

My only interest is in having comparable browsing speed and functionality to that of my wife's identical, IDENTICAL, iPad under 7.1.2
