Dec 2, 2014 6:24 PM in response to dadzponyby kaz-k,If you can boot OS X from HDD, delete files of your home directory which you don't need anymore, then boot with Install DVD which came with your MacBook Pro and verify your HDD with Disk Utility if it's OK.

The simplest way is to start it up with the original disks. Go to Disk Utility and try to repair the original drive. If Disk Utility can't repair it then it's probably dead.
If you had a drive in an external enclosure with an appropriate OS you could boot with that also. Hold "option" down while booting and select the drive you want to boot from.
