Q: Yosemite not for me?

OS X 10.9.5

Processor 266 GHz

Memory 2GB 1076MHz

240GB Free out of 319 GB

A while back I "upgraded" to Yosemite and noticed my system ran slower and some web pages wouldn't load. I had Mountain Lion with less issues and less pinwheels. I went to YO to improve the slow loading but I now feel it is worse.

Should I return to ML or work out issues with YO?

I've talked with a AppleRep a month back and did a PRAM reset and disc repair but that didn't seem to help.

I've also had issues with forums where my font would change when I would quote someone and when posting it would be blank.

My modem and router have been replaced without any notice in improvement.

thanks

Each new upgrade will run slower unless you check to make sure all your software is up to date and compatible.  Look at each of your apps and see if they are up to date.  Remove any virus programs you have.  This is just for starters.  You also need more than 2GB of RAM.  Need min. of 4GB but with Yosemite 8 or more is best.  I run 16GB and use 12GB normally.

I don't recommend Yosemite to anyone unless you MUST have the iPhone integration features.

Your iMac is starved for RAM.

2 GBs of RAM just isn't enough for newer versions of OS X.

The bare minimum "real world" working minimum of RAM is really 4 GBs.

Your year and model IMac can take a total of 8 GBs of RAM.

I, strongly, advise that you install the total 8 GBs of RAM.

Correct , compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com)

    Next,

Completely and properly uninstall eveything Symantec Norton.

    https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080427024142EN_En dUserProfile_en_us

OS X does NOT need to have ANY commercial antivirus installled. Commercial antivirus wares intefere with the normal operation and security features of OS X.

If you feel you need some sort of virus protection download and install

    ClamXAV

    http://www.clamxav.com/

    And follow this advice.

Some anti-virus solutions can slow down your Mac, but to be honest, the best anit-virus app is you, the user and your brain.

Don't visit questionable websites or website you are unsure about.

Don't use Torrents or engage in "Torrenting"

Don't install pirated software or software downloaded from a questionable or unknown websites or untrutsted sources.

Java is still a vulnerability concern,  if you do not need it, don't use it.

Use a browser filter and pop-up blocker

Don't open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize.

Install security updates when they become available

Educate yourself as to what threats are common and active.

In effect, use your own brain as the antivirus filter.

Follow that advise and in MOST cases, you will be fine and won't risk your Mac to potential Trojans, malware or viruses.

    And look into these

    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1982

    http://www.thesafemac.com/mmg/

    http://www.thesafemac.com/arg/

    http://www.thesafemac.com/mpg/

Update all of your installed software and updated all connected third party device software and drivers.

Update all of the various web browser plugins you that have installed within your web browser.

Thank you both for your help. That's a lot of information to absorb in those links.

I didn't think I was using all of my memory and curious why more would be needed? This Mac is used for surfing mostly and photo storage which I reduced a while back. No gaming or music sharing.

With the help of an AppleTech I've emptied the cache files that had over 5K files, that seemed to help with overall speed but some web pages still load slower than they use to but they are better than before. I still have the problem with one forum I visit and quoting someone. This quirk baffled the AppleTech. Not a big deal but really weird.

I removed the adware with success and will work on the Norton next.

Thanks again, I've learned a lot with your help.

I attempted to uninstall Norton and got this pop--up "Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers."

I will need to look into this further.

Removing Norton fixed my forum quirk.

I'm also running much faster so you guys have been a great help.

I need to hang out here more often.

My only other complaint is some videos, pictures and especially GIF's don't load as fast as I would like. I'll do some searches and my answer may be in some of the links that were offered that I have yet to read.

    Thanks again!!!

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

If i'm not using all of my memory that I have now what would be the advantage of adding more?
