Q: Considering purchasing Aperture 3

When I upgraded to Yosemite, I discovered that Aperture 2 is not supported. Amazon is selling Aperture 3 for $50. Apple is selling version 3.6 for $80. Are the updates from 3 to 3.6 free? Also, can 3 (from Amazon) be installed on Yosemite? Thanks.

The Aperture 3 version in the boxed retail version will be an early version, Aperture 3.0 or Aperture 3.1.x that will not run on Yosemite. You will have to run the updaters from Apple's support page to get to Aperture 3.4.5, that still will not run on Yosemite, so yo will not be able to enter the serial number(s). You would have to downgrade back to Mavericks to be able to authorise your retail copy from Amazon.  The updates beyond Aperture 3.4.5 require, that your installed version has been associated with your AppleID at the AppStore. This could be done during the update from Aperture 3.4.5 to Aperture 3.5.1, while running Mavericks, but this window of opportunity closed, because now the App Store is selling Aperture 3.6 and not Aperture 3.5.1. You will have to contact Apple Support with a proof of purchase for aperture 3 to send you a redeem code to download Aperture 3.6 for free,

Is the upgrade from Amazon an upgrade installer, that requires a version 1 or 2 to reinstalled? Then you will have to enter the serial numbers of all previous versions to authorize the newly installed Aperture 3.

It will be much less involved to simply buy the Aperture 3.6 version from the AppStore.

The last paragraph in the Release notes has some advice on upgrading from Aperture 2 to 3:  Aperture 3.6 Release notes

Aperture will no longer be developed by Apple, but supported during the life cycle of Yosemite. So Aperture 3.6 will be the last release you will be able to buy:  Aperture is Dead. Long Live Photos! | ApertureExpert
