Q: iOS 8.1: creating new mail asks for icloud password

On my iPhone I have set up an iCloud account for contacts, calender and all the icloud goodies and my old google account for mail. There is no mail address assigned in the icloud account.

Since the update to iOS 8.1 I get polled for the icloud password when

- trying to write a new mail. I can cancel the password request and writing and sending mail works nevertheless

- activating airdrop for contacts only. Regardless of entering the password or not airdrop does not get activated.

It was working in iOS 8.0.2 (at least the mail part). Any idea what causes the password requests?

    Scoobs,

I can't believe that the issue was because I had capital letters in my Account.

I wiped, restored, wiped, restored, wiped, reconfigured by hand and spent an hour and a half with Apple Support.

The funny part was Apple support's fix was to test with iCloud disable, of course that worked, then they gave me a case number and sent me on my way.

I knew it was a problem with my iCloud account, but I would have never though it was because I had capital letters in my account.

    Thanks!

I just went into setting ---> icloud ---> and turned off "mail". it worked immediately so unless you use icloud mail this is a good option

Really wish the lowercase solution worked for me. My Apple ID has always been lowercase and it still is. Mail has also been off in iCloud. Any other thoughts?

Thanks- had a user who was totally frustrated so we did as you suggested. Signed out of icloud, hard rebooted the device and then logged back in with no capital letters- no more icloud password prompt. Thanks!!!

Thanks for this this has plagued me for months.  almost went Windows phone.

I have had a mare with this and even the "geniuses!!" at Apple store hadn't a clue.

I was doubly perplexed as it asked for my Yahoo password on my iPad but my iCloud password on my iPhone.
