Q: Yosemite bluetooth pairing with keyboard and trackpad

Updated to Yosemite last night, can't seem to pair with my apple bluetooth keyboard or trackpad today. They won't even show up as discoverable. And before you suggest it, yes I have reset the PRAM.

I had the same problem after upgrading.  Mouse paired but the keyboard wouldn't. Went through the normal stuff- moved batteries, called up Bluetooth Prefs, installed batteries, held down the power on key on the keyboard. The green light never did blink- just went out after a few seconds. The keyboard showed up but wouldn't pair. Finally, I took the keyboard into a different room and did the battery thing. This time when I pressed the power on key, it did start blinking. I was able to pair it to my Mac.

Seems the trick is to move the keyboard far enough away from the original computer, so when you power it back on, it doesn't find it's paired device and lets you pair again.

After the OS upgrade to Yosemite I could turn the BT radio on and off, but it would not connected to, discover, or pair with any existing or new Bluetooth devices.  Following several other proposed solutions (Verify Disk, Repair Disk Permissions, Reset PRAM, Reset SMC, etc...) did nothing.  Using Bluetooth Explorer (from Apple, not the App Store) finally did the trick.

Bluetooth Explorer can be downloaded from https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action.

You will need a (free) developer account to access the download.

Download the "Hardware IO Tools for XCode" DMG file and double-click to mount it.  Then run Bluetooth Explorer right from within the mounted volume.

I checked off almost all the boxes in order to do a complete reset of the BT system.  Pressed the "Go" button, wait for it to finish, then rebooted.

Everything worked perfectly after the reboot (though I did have to re-pair my mouse and speaker since all pairing data was reset too).

    Good luck.

I've had issues reconnecting my bluetooth keyboard & trackpad since upgrading to Yosimite.

I run this script via custom Automator Application:

    1) Search for (Spotlight search) and run Automator

    2) Click "New Document" at bottom

    3) Choose "Application" for new file type

    4) Click on "Utilities" from list

    5) Double-Click "Run AppleScript"

    6) Replace (* Your script goes here *) with:

do shell script "kextunload -b com.apple.iokit.BroadcomBluetoothHostControllerUSBTransport; kextload -b com.apple.iokit.BroadcomBluetoothHostControllerUSBTransport" with administrator privileges

    7) Press play to test (will prompt for password)

    8) File->Save to desktop or wherever

Run the automator app whenever bluetooth devices won't connect

Thanks Wineman - you totally hooked me up with exactly the same problem.  Seems like something coming from the Yosemite release - the bluetooth preferences is a lot more automatic, with less manual options to work through things...

Brilliant.  Sometimes you have to take a few steps back from a problem in order to solve it.

in my case, the problem with my bluetooth connection was that my keyboard was synced to my ipad. I updated to Yosemite at the same time so I didn't know what was the cause of the problem.

So i just had to turn off the bluetooth on my ipad, then it was able to connect
