Q: Mail SMTP (outgoing) does not work after Yosemite upgrade

I have just updated Yosemite on my Mac and MacBook Air and the outgoing mails cannot be sent - the SMTP-connection fails.

It worked fully Ok few seconds before the upgrade was started.

So, I wonder if anyone or Apple can help on getting the Outgoing mails to work again.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2010), iOS 8.0.2

    I FOUND THE FIX

    Log into your router and find the place that allows e-mail servers. Yours might not be listed.

    For example, Godaddy was not listed on the list of the #1 Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Germany.

    My solution - use mozilla Thunderbird.

    I have just wasted three hours AGAIN trying to get a single email to send.  I am utterly fed up with Apple Mail.

    I installed, configured and sent my email in less than 5 minutes with Thunderbird.

    Fantastic best option of all the ones I have tried by far!

    Back and running after 2 weeks of misery. Seriously disappointed and no option to remove Yosemite, I thought it was only Microsoft that released software with so many problems!

    I found it in the security/privacy options. You just have to look around. Mine was under "allowed email servers". Look for something like that, a list of servers. Godaddy is smtpout.secureserver.net. In Europe it's smtpout.europe.secureserver.net.

    It should be there somewhere when you log into your router.

    There are no such options in the Time Capsule router accessed through the Airport Utility.

    Okay, I'm a luddite but even I know your time capsule and airport utility have nothing to do with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) router. You have to log into your router provided by your ISP. For example, I type in 192.168.2.1 and I get into my ISP router. In my case, I then enter my passcode (found on the back of my ISP router) and then I am into the settings of my ISP router.

    It has nothing to do with Time Capsule or Airport Utility.

    Maybe it's different here in Germany, but I'm pretty sure it's exactly the same in the UK, and I'm guessing everywhere else.

    ISPs have become tighter with privacy settings and security. I also think it has something to do with DNS. Don't ask me why, it's just a Mac wizard here in Germany couldn't understand why my ISP didn't automatically reconcile the problem. He mumbled something about DNS.

    Good luck.

    When I say "type in 192. etc etc" I mean you type into the thing at the top like you're typing in a web address. I'm a luddite. I don't know what thing is at the top.

    hey,

    first of all thanks for all your help!! I still can´t configure my router, I don't have server options. I talked with my provider and they say the don't have that option and that apple should fix this problem.

    my last question is : If you add your godaddy  provider in your home router options you will not be able to send emails again when you change location right? like in a public wifi or in any other place unless you configure another modem (router)  am I right?

    best regards

    Last time. Wrong. Only if the public ISP doesn't support your email server.

    Your first level dodo support person at a call center probably doesn't realise all routers have settings that can be navigated and configured. Don't trust them. Just get into your router settings and look around. You must be able to get in. Type in your IP address and enter your password when prompted. No one told me how to do it. I just figured it out.

    Take your Mac to a Mac wizard who has been recommended and ask them to check everything. Then you'll know it's probably not your Mac.

    That's it for me. Good luck.

    I use my ISP supplied modem/router only as a modem. I use the router in my time capsule.

    hey.

    i have the same problem. all my email accounts can't send because of server error. i try some things from the first three pages of this thread but nothing is working. frustrating.

    now it works for me by simply re-enter the password in the mail settings. please try this:

    - open mail and go to settings

    - in accounts choose one of your mail-accounts and click on the smtp-server

    - in this list choose "edit smtp-server list" (the last in the list)

    - in the popup choose a email-account, go to advanced and re-enter the password

    - click ok and try to send a mail

    i have no problems since i do this. no after restart mail and/or mac.

    hope it works for you too.

    good luck

    Tried all of the listed fixes (editing the account.plist, deleting the account completely, multiple resets), but going in and changing the password in the "edit smtp-sever list" was the only one that finally worked. Thanks!

    I tried Helicopterjon's solution this way:

    Mail Preferences

    --> Accounts

    --> Advanced

    --> Uncheck "Allow insecure authentication"

    --> Back to Accounts

    --> Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)

    --> Edit SMTP ServerList

    --> Uncheck "Allow insecure authentication"

    --> Save

    But the Library File continued to show "<false/>

    And my problems continued.

    I then used Helicopterjon's method of altering the Library file.

    Problems continued!

    Anyone suggest how we can pressure Apple to fix the Yosemite/Mail problem?

    Thanks!

    ...John
