Dec 8, 2014 6:00 PM in response to Marcus Girvanby Bob R Oregon,You need to re-state what have you done.
If you "have just re-installed SL", then SL is supposedly now installed on your hard drive.
If you have multiple bootable partitions on your hard drive, you can choose which one to boot from by holding "option" down while booting.
It might help if you give more info about your system, what year is it, why you re-installed SL, did you have bootcamp...
May or may not help:
On an iMac shutdown and pull the power cord. Wait 30s, plug it backin, wait 5s, then restart
Command-Option-P-R Reset PRAM

Dec 8, 2014 6:20 PM in response to Marcus Girvanby Bob R Oregon,★HelpfulAre you getting a screen with a lock icon on it, does it look different from your normal username/password login screen?
If so, a firmware password may be set.

If the following don't apply to your iMac model, search with keywords: firmware password

Dec 30, 2014 9:53 AM in response to Marcus Girvanby Marcus Girvan,Belated thanks to those that replied. I've only just now got up and running again.
The only answer, in the end was to take it to a Genius Bar. A Genius at Braehead did the job and gave me the (un) welcome news that my 2009 iMac is now a legacy model and various bits can no longer be replaced with new. After only 5 years that seems a bit short. Even washing machines can be repaired up to 10 years old.

Dec 30, 2014 12:45 PM in response to Marcus Girvanby Kurt Lang,★HelpfulWhat the Genius told you doesn't even make sense. Replace what bits? Did they determine the hardware itself was faulty? Or did they mean the OS?

Dec 30, 2014 1:52 PM in response to Marcus Girvanby Kurt Lang,Ah! Okay, that makes sense. It's not important that the internal drive can't be replaced. The external you have works just as well.
