I'm so confused. I don't even have an iPhone. I rock an Android for a phone. Sacrilege!

Anyway, I was just hoping to be able to use my iMac's iMessage to ocasionally send/receive texts. That's what Pogue suggested Yosemite could do. So far I am not impressed. I seriously need to have an iPhone and keep it "near?" I can't even comprehend the words I'm reading -- if they are correct!

Recently while I was running the Dev Previews for Yosemite I lost the ability to send iMessages from my Mac. No issues exist on my iPhone 6 (8.0.2). Even updating to the public release of 10.10, I still have issues. My messages receive the "!" error and always look like they're trying to send the messages via SMS, even when its an iMessage account.

    So far I have:

    • Changed my iTunes password several times
    • Reset Network Settings on my iPhone
    • Did a clean reinstall of Yosemite (no backups were restored, out of box new)

And when I do my initial add of my iCloud account onto my Mac, everything works except iMessage. The error states that the phone number I'm trying to message is not registered with iMessage, but I know for a fact they are iMessage numbers that work. I can't even send a test message to myself.

My phone number and email addresses are both listed as ways to reach me, the same phone numbers and email addresses I have listed under my iPhone's settings. I don't understand why this issue persists on just the Mac

I've been silent for a long time since my original cry for help was made. I've recently updated my MBPR to Yosemite and my iPad Air + iPhone 6 to iOS 8.1. Still having no luck with sending iMessages on my Mac, and now more recently- my iPad. I have set up all my devices with text message forwarding - I can send ONLY text messages from my Mac, they mirror on my iPad and my iPhone, but of course my responders shoot back with an iMessage.. which doesn't show up on my Mac.

So after all the updates... still no luck with getting iMessage to work properly across all my devices.

I too am still having the issue of all contacts on my macbook saying "not registered with iMessage." It is a real bummer, been like this since Early September. I upgraded to Yosemite, but went back down to Mavericks because I couldn't run a lot of my programs, but even while on Yosemite iMessage still did not work. When I downgraded to Mavericks I had to erase my hard drive completely and reinstall OS X from the original disc, I thought after doing that the iMessage might work, but it still didn't and doesn't. Why can't Apple fix this if so many people are having the same problem?

Myself as well, I'm hoping it works, but I think I can throw Apple a bone here with something I've observed:

Semi-recently (within the last 2-3 months) my 5s was acting up, it lost the capability to talk to cell networks. The Apple Store switched it out with a brand new one.

1 week later, my iPhone 6 arrived and I took the offer from Apple to swap out my 5s for a gift card that paid for the cost of the iPhone 6.

The Kicker: When I log into iCloud, I see my previous two iPhone 5s phones, my iPhone 6, and my MacBook Pro. However, when I log into Find my iPhone, I only have my iPhone 6 and MacBook Pro listed. I am unable to remove the previous two iPhone 5s' from my iCloud account.

I believe these two phones sitting in here are causing a conflict. Would you (and anyone else as well) check this to see if its a consistent issue?

Thanks Ralph.  I think it was the plist that finally made it work.  In Yosemite there is a prompt that asks you if you want to use your Mac to receive and respond to text messages, followed by a minor passcode exchange, then everything works.

    Hi,

At this point, despite the fact the issue has been reported to Apple Via Feedback and via the Hosts on these Discussion Boards, I would contact Apple Support and tell them you think you have an Account problem with iMessages.

Account issues tend to be fixed for free (they do try and tell you it is a Hardware or Software issue).  Ask to speak to a Level 2 person if you are having no luck.

    Hi,

I must admit I have seen this Devices List that shows an extra iPhone that I delete the settings from before I then did  Factory reset.

I think that to get it removed you may have to ask Apple Support.

My experiences - mine stopped working at some point in Mavericks. I hoped the upgrade to Yosemite would fix it but no luck

Been dealing with an Apple support guy all week, nothing fixed it. Tried using an new test account on my own mac, nada.

At his suggestion, with my girlfriend logged into her own mac I signed her out of imessages and signed in myself - it worked fine. So it would appear something definitely specific to my Mac.

In desperation I did a wipe and clean Yosemite install on my mac yesterday. Still didn't work :-(

Will report back to the Apple guy tomorrow.

    Hi,

We know from one particular Error Messages the Messages shows to some people that Apple Support have to sort that issue at their end.

We also know that since OS X 10.8.2 which update Messages to version 7.0.1 that  the Mac Serial Number has to be readable on the hardware to the System Info app as it is used to create the Auth Token needed when communicating with the server.

(i.e. some issues would seem to be specific to individual Apps based on how they Login to the server - why the server is rejecting info that did work is another question).

See if the Apple Support People will reset you account on the iMessages server.

As of tonight my MESSAGE IS WORKING ON MY MACBOOK PRO! It's a CHRISTMAS MIRACLE.

I didn't do a thing. It just started showing all my messages. Thank you Apple elves.

Fingers crossed it doesn't go away.

Wow. I spoke too soon. My MacBook Pro did some app updates and so I restarted my computer.... iMessage does NOT work anymore. I'm back to square one.

Why would a restart cause the issue again? So weird!

Unfortunately I have had the same kind of false-start fix happen to me too.

    Hi,

    Which Updates ?

Only something like an OS X update such as going from OS X 10.10 to OS X 10.10.1 is likely to cause this unless you are updating a FONT app that might be clashing with Font Book and turning certain Fonts Off.

After spending a half hour working on this bug I finally got it to work by going to the iCloud Preferences on my Mac, fully disabling it, and then re-enabling it from there. Nothing else seemed to work, but I can confirm as soon as I did that I could send SMS again from Messages
