Dec 9, 2014 6:47 PM in response to jarmac99by Sparkleberry,First find your original install disc for Office 2011
Then make a backup of your Mac with Time Machine
Then remove Office 2011 entirely according to MS directions
See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398768
Then reinstall Office 2011
Then methodically work your way up through the updates using the update feature within Word or Excel or PPT until you get to current latest release which is 14.4.6.

Thanks!

Aug 9, 2015 5:45 AM in response to M9100009by ApMaX,Same problem here with Word 2011 version 14.5.3 on Mac OS X 10.10.4 (14E46).
Word does not quit if I am editing a document (with track changes but I never click the top left green button for full screen). But if then I leave the Mac idle for some minutes, Word always crashes. If I open Word again, a "Microsoft Error Reporting" shows and the previously open file(s) open automatically.
Any idea on how to avoid that?

Aug 13, 2015 7:41 AM in response to Eric Rootby ApMaX,I have done, yet the problem remains even with the new Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 14.5.4 Update. Even with documents without track changes active. And even with blank documents with no text inside.

Aug 13, 2015 8:43 AM in response to ApMaXby JimmyCMPIT,I'd try the following in this order
scenario 1:
repair permissions
About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature - Apple Support
scenario 2:
boot into safe mode
OS X Yosemite: Start up in safe mode
scenario 3:
try making a new account with Administrative rights,
boot into that account
run word
if it does not crash you could have a corruption with your account or some kind of incompatibility that Word does not like.

Aug 13, 2015 3:31 PM in response to M9100009by VikingOSX,Because Office for Mac 2011 installs things into System locations, the update of the operating system may have impacted what Word is expecting to find. If you are experiencing this Word crash after applying all updates for Office for Mac 2011, then you may need to uninstall Office for Mac 2011 using the official Microsoft uninstall process, and then reinstall Office for Mac 2011, and again, apply all updates.
If you are an inaugural user of Office 2016 for Mac, be certain you have applied all updates to it. This version of Office on the Mac does not install fonts or other detritus into system areas — the applications all are self-contained.
