Q: Canon PIXMA MP620 not found on network with Yosemite and 3.0 Canon Driver Upate

Just upgraded both of my home systems to Yosemite and installed the Canon 3.0 driver update, and now I can't connect to my Canon PIXMA MP620 over the network, and I can't re-add it after deleting it from the printer list--just never shows up in the "Add" list like it would previously.

What's particularly strange is that I'm 95% certain I printed something to it without thinking about it just after upgrading to Yosemite, but before installing the driver update offered by the App store.  If I'm remembering that right, it was the driver update, not Yosemite itself, that killed printing.

However, since there's no direct download for Yosemite on Canon's site, I can't revert.  Any suggestions?  Anybody getting networked Canon inkjets to function properly?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10), GT750, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD

A suggestion would be to connect the MP620 to the Mac via USB cable. This action should automatically create a printer in Printers & Scanners. If not then you will have to manually create the printer.

With the USB connected printer created, see if you can print. If you can then it confirms that the driver update is okay.

Assuming that you can print via USB, then turn off the MP620 power and disconnect the USB cable. Then power it back on and you may want to remove the MP620 printer residing in Printers & Scanners, as this will only work when the printer is connected via USB.

Now, with the MP620 connected to your network but not appearing in the Default view, the device uses Bonjour and a Canon proprietary protocol to advertise itself on the network. To check if Bonjour is working, open Safari and then open its Preferences pane. Under the Advanced tab you will see an entry of Bonjour. If you enable the setting to enable Bonjour in your Favorites bar, you will then see an entry of Bonjour in the bar. Select this and if the MP620 is advertising itself using Bonjour, then it should be listed under this bookmark. Do you see it? If not, then check the IP address being used by the MP620. If you enter this IP address into Safari, this should result in you connecting to the internal web page of the printer. Does this happen?

Thanks for the suggestions, PAHU.  Oddly, before I could really dig into troubleshooting, this issue resolved itself for no apparent reason.

The issue was never the driver; if I plugged a computer directly into the printer with a USB cable, it worked fine.  It's just the Bonjour discovery--which is usually fully automatic, with the printer just showing up in the list when you go to add one--was never bringing it up, even after a very long wait and power cycles.

However, at some point in the last few days, it just started working as expected again.  There were some Mac reboots in there, which may have been what did it, but for whatever reason it's now showing up via Bonjour as it should.  (In fact, I didn't even need to add it--it was automatically in the printer list.)

I kinda hate things that fix themselves without explanation like that, but at least it works now (as does scanning).

Just a quick reply for others in case it helps....

First you have to install the Canon drivers for Yosemite from Canon Printer Drivers v3.1 for OS X.

Then since I had reset my Canon MP620 network settings, I had to start from scratch. I connected the printer to my new computer (with Yosemite) via USB and then launched the Canon IJ Network Tool.app (downloaded from the Canon web site) and it found the printer. However it hung on the last step "Searching for printers via access point...". At that point (after waiting a minute for it to give up), I had to read the IP from the Canon printer and enter it by hand in the Network Tool dialog.

I then unplugged the USB cable, and went to the Printers and Scanners system preference panel. After a few minutes, the printer showed up and I was able to set it up.

I then tried to set up the printer on a 2nd computer, running Mavericks. The Canon printer would not show up in the Printers and Scanners system preference panel, but after I launched Canon IJ Network Tool.app on that computer, the printer did show up and I could set it up there as well. This is all much more convenient than using a USB cable and sharing the printer, but, dang, is it complicated!

I discovered all of that on my own, and did get my MX-700 up and running.  The MP Navigator EX software works, but between the idiotic 20-character limit on file names, and the inability to remember where your last pdf was saved to, it's a real pain in the butt to use.  Unfortunately, the 'File>Import from scanner' command in Preview is greyed out, and the Image Capture app says "No camera or scanner connected," so I have no choice.

Any thoughts on how to get the Import command, and/or Image Capture, back in operation?

If Canon can't be bothered to support their hardware, and I need to replace this scanner, I don't think I'll be buying one of theirs again!

To use Image Capture you need an ICA driver. MP Navigator uses a different protocol called TWAIN.

Here is a link to the ICA driver for OS X 10.9. I think it should install and function on 10.10 and let you use Image Capture/Preview to scan.

In case it will help anyone, I had to RESTART my macbook after loading the drivers for the wireless printer to be detected.

Just out of interest, are you on 2.4ghz or 5ghz wifi?

This solution worked perfectly.  I had spent six hours with both Canon and Apple tech support, and neither was able to solve the problem, but downloading the latest drivers, and following the steps that you suggested finally got Yosemite and my Canon Pixma MP620 working wirelessly.  It's hard to believe that both Canon and Apple did not know this solution.
