Mac mini late 2012 wakes up unexpectedly with password field filling by itself

I just upgraded from OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 and have difficulty keeping my computer asleep. I always put it to sleep using the drop down menu.

Symptoms are:

1. Power light on Mac mini does not always pulsate from dim to bright when asleep. It is often constantly lit.

2. Mac mini wakes up without user intervention with password field filling itself in as if someone is typing it.

Attached peripherals:

Apple Magic Mouse (Bluetooth wireless)

Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (USB)

Actions I have taken to remedy the situation:

* Turned Magic Mouse off using the power switch

* Turned off Wake for Network Access

* Turned off Sharing, deselecting every option

* Turned off Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer

This problem did not occur with OS X Mavericks.

Nothing is resting on the keyboard or mouse that could cause this.

Thank you for any suggestions and solutions. I appreciate any help.

I also tried plugging my Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad into a different USB slot

as it was making typing my password difficult but it made no difference.

Only enabling CAPS LOCK stopped the

keyboard from typing by itself but then I can't enter my password. 😕

However, this does not occur when logged in. The keyboard is perfectly fine logged in

and does not attempt to type on its own.

After the Mac mini wakes up by itself and displays the username and password field, it

will sometimes go back to sleep without me touching the computer.

I was just lying down in bed and saw my Mac awake from sleep and then after 30 seconds

it went back to sleep again.

Maybe I can turning off Bluetooth completely or using my Logitech mouse to rule things out more.

Hi Loner.

I did the following:

1. Turned off Bluetooth and switched off Magic Mouse

2. Installed Logitech USB mouse

3. Put Mac mini to sleep

I thought that would solve it but it woke up from sleep again with this in the logs:

I'm perplexed but now we know it has nothing to do with the Magic Mouse. 😀

I'm no expert but this worked fine under Mavericks.

Perhaps it is a keyboard driver that's a bit wonky under Yosemite while in sleep mode?

Maybe the OS can't communicate properly with the keyboard while asleep.

I have an idea to rule it out further:

I'll try unplugging the keyboard and use the Logitech USB mouse to put

it to sleep again.

I'll report back with any findings.

I put the Mac mini to sleep with the Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (USB) unplugged.

Only the Logitech USB mouse was plugged in.

Success, apparently:

Notice the XHC1 activity this time instead of EHC2 activity.

The keyboard certainly is not defective. It works perfectly fine when OS X Yosemite is running.

All keys function as they should.

I guess I have to just shut down the computer each time or just turn my monitor off.

I also have an HDMI Dell S2440L monitor that has an audio out and delivers

audio to my Creative Gigaworks T40 II speakers.

In Mavericks I got sound from both speakers.

With Yosemite I get sound only from the right speaker.

I checked MIDI settings, sound settings and sudo killall coreaudiod, etc

but no success. Even shutting off the monitor and turning it

back on still only delivers audio to the right speaker.

I guess I have to plug my speakers into the headphone jack on the Mac mini

but the sound quality there isn't as good... better than nothing I suppose.

I'll open up a new thread about the audio issue.

I hope Apple will fix the Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad waking up the computer under Yosemite. It must be a bug.

Yosemite is a bit buggy but looks way better than Mavericks, IMHO.

Thanks for any help. I appreciate it.

Hi Loner.

If you want the points, just tell me, "perform an SMC and NVRAM reset" and I'll give you the credit. I can't

give myself points! heheh..

I can't believe it, but it WORKED and it worked for my audio issue AND for

the sleep problem.

My bluetooth mouse acts as it should: it does not wake the computer when clicked

and that is just as I set it.

This is solved.

Never underestimate the utility of performing an SMC and NVRAM reset — especially right after an upgrade to a new OS!
