Q: Sleep/Wake issue with 5K Retina

I Have just purchased an Apple iMac 5K Retina, 4Ghz and 16 GB of RAM. I am experiencing an intermittent warning, which suggests that the system has restarted from Sleep, for some reason. I have contacted Apple Service, who took over the system and gave it a thorough test. After the test and removing an external Disc, the problem seemed to have disappeared. However, this afternoon, it came back again. After closing the warning, the computer seems to operate as expected, with no obvious  symptoms. i have originally been told that I can return the iMac if the error re-occurs, which it has. The system is not standard, so I probably would not get a replacement before Christmas, but having spent over £2000 on the equipment, I do not want a flawed product. I will also find the re-instatement to Factory settings a real ' ***'. Any advice from an expert would be much appreciated, before I ring Apple tomorrow. Should I try to return it or is it a trivial issue?

    Hi Kevin,

Not the answer that I was hoping for, but probably, what I expected. Not looking forward to the telecon with Apple tomorrow, and getting it back to them, if they agree.

I got  my 27 inch 4ghz i7 on Thursday last. I'm just reinstalling the OSX using recovery. I would feel the same about it as you. Have you tried a reinstall of the OSX. I understand it's a couple of hour job and if your still well within your return days worth trying. To Apple its a unit, but to you a large investment. I am sure Apple would not want you to be unhappy with it. I have always found that a reinstall of the OSX is generally necessary within a few days anyway. I think my issue was caused by a failed migration from my other iMac.

Tth option R recovery does not delete your other data, just reinstalls the operating system. I did this with Apple last week with my older system it was very painless.

I am sure you know this. Turn the iMac off. Hold down option and r when you power on. Hold until Apple logo appears! then release. You will then get 4 or 5 options ( sorry late at night in UK)

Select reinstall operating system and then wait. Depending on your broadband speed it could take a while. For me it's 4 hours but I have a very slow broadband at moment, awaiting Fibre optic. I suspect yours will be faster.

    Hi Kevin

Thanks for the suggestion. I have gone back to Apple Support and got one of their Senior guys on the case. He says that the issue, is a software one, probably an issue with my back up from my Airport Time Capsule. He went into my system and changed a few things, which at the moment seems to have sorted the issue. They now have my case on record, so I hope that it has now gone away. The error message was an irritation, but it did not seem to affect the performance in any way, so I have kept the machine.

Glad  the issue has been sorted for you. I sorted my IMac out by reinstalling OSX.

I got my iMac Retina also beginning of December. I'm experiencing exactly the same issues.

What I have to point out is that I migrated the system, settings and data from my old iMac (2011) which worked flawlessly (lately). Therefore I don't thinkt that it's particularly a problem of the system.

As quite a few people on the net (also at macrumors Forum) are experiencing these issues I also don't think that it's an issue that would be resolved by replacing the machine.

I remember well when my iMac 2011 was new that I've had some serious problems with sleep/wake too; that machine wouldn't freeze and reboot back then but it wouldn't sleep and constantly wake up from sleep. The issue disappeared after some OS updates back then...

I'm quite confident that we're looking onto some driver and/or app problems that surface on the combination of Yosemite and the new 5k iMac. Over all Yosemite seems to be having plenty of bugs on newer macs from what I read on Twitter and so on. Graphics performance of the OS UI isquite poor (not in terms of fps but generally) and it'd bet that Apple rather soon will let us have some OS & Firmware upgrade to resolve some issues.

However, I'm also going tof file a complaint just to have it in Apples systems that some things just aren't right....

    Hi

Thanks for your helpful response. I have got Apple to check the system out and log the issue. If i leave it on Sleep overnight, that is when I seem to get the 'problem', although it does not seem to adversely affect the operation, nevertheless any warning messages, on a new machine are a concern. I do concur with your comment: I also don't think that it's an issue that would be resolved by replacing the machine.'

Yeah, both, warning messages schouldn't happen at all on a new system and/or machine - BUT: what concernes me even more is the fact that BEFORE the reboot/crash happens the system cycles through quite a few sleep/wake steps, continuously spinning up/down the harddrive (I've got the machine with Fursiondrive) and that's not good for the drive at all. Plus: Each time iTunes was opened when the system crashed iTunes has to check it's database - and for my huge aperture library this won't be good either....

Wow!! That sounds a lot more serious, than I had expected. I too have a Fusion Drive. Where did you get your information from?

Well, it's not so much about where this info comes from, it's just how tings are with good old harddrives. Start/Stop cycles can (not must) wear down the drive faster than continuous operation. - of course this doesn't mean the drive will fail extremely quickly, it might work longer than you or I will own the iMac itself...

As with the databases I just don't want to put them on risk. iTunes is not that big of a problem as everything is stored in the cloud but with aperture I'm just concerned...

So while still having no solution I've tried several things to solve the problem though:

I've read in some forums that dropbox might have been an issue. Uninstalled it, problem persisted.

I've also unpluged each USB cable one after the other to see if any of the USB devices caused the Problem. No result. My iMac persistantly woke up from sleep even with no USB device connected at all.

Logs show the following on each occasion:

    • Wake reasion: XHC1 (which apparently is USB)
    • The USB device BRCM20702 Hub (Port 8 of Hub at 0x14000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (3)
    • The USB device Bluetooth USB Host Controller (Port 3 of Hub at 0x14800000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (3)

    Bildschirmfoto 2014-12-10 um 18.26.44 20141210.jpg

    Systemprofile tells us that:

    1. 0x14000000 i couldn't clearly identify but
    2. 0x148000000 should be "BRCM20702 Hub

    Bildschirmfoto 2014-12-10 um 18.23.14 20141210.jpg

    Conclusion:

As no EXTERNAL USB Device caused the iMac to wake up it must either be a driver failure or someting similar within the machine or some bluetooth device. The latter is less likely as it's the third of three wake reason provided by the console.

I do not have any wired keyboard or mouse so I can't verify wether Apples wireless Keyboard & Trackpad could be an issue.

You have certainly gone into the problem, with some detail! I am not sufficiently 'Techie', so I got Apple involved. Their Senior guy, said that it was a 'minor' issue and not hardware related. He thought that it might be part of the transfer over from my Apple AirPort Time Capsule backup. I never had any problem with my late 2009 iMac, so that's progress for you! I have to say, that today, I left my iMac, in sleep mode for several hours and there was no sleep/wake issue. So it has either gone, or is very intermittent.

I really do hope that the apple support is right (personally I also do think that it's not a hardware related issue)... it's just so annoying that we pay thousands of Euros (or Dollars) for then having a machine not working perfectly fine. Not very Apple like.
