Q: iTunes movie purchases will not play on external display - HDCP auth error

Hello,

Well, I'm surprised there hasn't been more of a storm over this one already but I expect there will be.

Just got a new MacBook last week and finally found a mini Display Port -> VGA adapter so i could use my 19" external display. I rented a movie from the iTunes store yesterday and when I tried to play it on my external display, it gave me a warning/error that the display was 'not an authorized HDCP display' and it would not play. Plays fine on the small MacBook screen, just nothing external. To make it even worse, i tried all the movies that I have purchased from the iTunes store with the same result... NONE of them will play on anything but the MacBook's small 13" screen. This is crazy unacceptable.

Has anyone else run into this yet or have any ideas of something I may be overlooking in order to get purchased movies to play on an external display?

Thanks!

MacBook unibody C2D 2.0/2.0/160, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

Sorry for my bad english. I want to share my  experience. I’ve just bought an HD movie on iTunes. I have MacPro 3.1 and HDCP monitor. Apple assures us that all we need for watching HD movies -

    • Mac OS X v10.5 or later
    • iTunes 10.6 or later
    • 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor
    • At least 2 GB of RAM
    • A display that supports HDCP with a screen resolution of 1280 x 800 or higher

    You can read more here.

I do have HDCP monitor (nec multisync p221w) but I still can not watch the movie I have bought. All i can see is a black screen of  iTunes.

Apple I have bought MacPro, I have bought HD movie on iTunes, I have bought HDCP monitor... What am i doing wrong?
Maybe it is better to use Amazon or Google Play to buy an HD movies?

Apple, if you're listening....wonder if Steve Jobs would allow this fiasco....This has just sealed my Apple buying habits.  Have mac mini with Dell ultra sharp, can't play material bought on itunes....RIP OFF!!! There's no place to complain, no more customer service, that Apple earned my business with...bought 15 macs last year.....Will never buy itunes again and debating Apple at all!  Pay attention Apple before it's too late....

Actually it is crap like this that makes me want to go pirate, I have purchased many movies,  rented tons too, I have always watched them on my pc / ext Monitor. Will not be making no more purchases until I can download and watch 1080 again like I was last week,

If I wanted SD there is plenty of 700 MB files for free, I pay $$$ for 1080, So see my money again when this is resolved.

Not sure if someone else has offered this solution, but there are 22 pages of replies. lol.  I found an answer that worked for me in a different thread.  I reset the "system controller something or another".  I shut down my Macbook Air (purchased in 2013, running 10.9.5).  You then hold down Shift+Control+Option+Power Button for 10 seconds.  Then restart your computer and play your HD iTunes movie on your external display (in my case it was a Panasonic Viera Plasma TV bough in 2009)

It worked, but the next time I tried and had to repeat the process. Obnoxious? Yes.  Did it work in a pinch? Yeah.

download DisplayLink USB Graphics Software for Mac OS X V2.3 Beta

i have a macbook air 11in, (mid 2012) running yosemite

was getting the hdcp error both while trying to play movies i bought from iTunes on my macbook with and without an external apple cinema display

    This is worked for me.

I have 2 x External Monitors connected to my 2014 MBP Retina.  iTunes HD movies worked on this setup under Mavericks, but ceased to work under Yosemite.  Movies would not run at all with no error messages under iTunes and if played via QuickTime would show that the Display was not authorised to play HDCP (despite running fine under Mavericks) with all the Apple approved HDMI to DVI & MiniDisplayPort to DVI adapters.

Installing the DisplayLink Graphics Software v2.3 Beta has now resolved this.

Thanks chasethesun...worked a treat this has been bugging me for weeks!

Totally agree, I started downloading movies because I felt how convenient,  No DVD's or Blurays to change,  Ill just build my library up VIA I tunes, Use to watch all the movies I bought on my big TV, Now I have to use a small laptop, They can look under my account and seen they use to make good money from me as I was downloading 4 to 6 movies a day. Thanks to this stupid new restriction I will not be finishing my library via I Tunes.  I will go back to torrent, Quality isnt as good as Itunes 1080's but at least I can play them on my big screen.

Sad when people take a awesome product and turn it to crap.  Good job Apple, How you going to charge close to store prices when it comes to buying and restrict the use of a item WE pay for.  Fk'n Stupid.

Did you disable Back to my Mac in iCloud settings, and disable screen sharing in Sharing settings?

Adding my voice to this. My windows machine is hooked up to a bona fide HD television and my downloaded itunes movies won't play.

Guess what does play fine on my TV, though? Literally everything on Netflix, Hulu, Sony's Playstation Store, and Amazon. If Apple doesn't want my money that's A-OK with me.

OMG NOW THE MOVIES I BOUGHT WON'T EVEN PLAY ON THE COMPUTER SCREEN OF THE COMPUTER I BOUGHT THEM WITH.
I am not connected to an external display of any kind, and I get the message that my display (the actual laptop) can't play the film because it's not a supported display.

    WOW.

Go ahead, keep stealing my money.
