(But thanks for responding; it's somewhat of a relief to hear that it's not just me.)

Dec 15, 2014 10:00 AM in response to Peter Duttonby Chris Brunnen1,Thanks for your reply. Having had a bit more searching, it looks like Apple have switched to Apple Maps rather than Google and, I'm guessing, the versions of OSX and Aperture we are using haven't been updated to allow for this. I'm reluctant to upgrade my Mac due to some old software that will no longer work but might have to use an old machine just for that.

Dec 15, 2014 12:56 PM in response to Chris Brunnen1by Peter Dutton,I've read that more recent versions of Aperture changed to Apple Maps over a year ago, but this problem just started happening this past week. So it might be some of the story, but perhaps not all of the story.
Be that as it may, if you're looking to geotag photos in Aperture, I've found an okay workaround, as long as you have Google Earth. This guy wrote a script that will set the location of any photos you have selected in Aperture to the center of the map window open in Google Earth: http://www.underdoug.ca/2012/08/13/geotagging-with-google-earth-and-aperture/
You'll need a crosshair to put at the center of the map window. The link to the one he suggests is broken. I found another one: http://regex.info/blog/2009-06-02/1225 - Just download the .kmz file and double-click it to import it into Google Earth (you might have to restart Google Earth to get it to show up).
It's unwieldy, but it'll have to do for now. Good luck.

Dec 20, 2014 12:22 PM in response to Peter Duttonby Peter Dutton,Well, the solution that ultimately worked for me is to:
1) Upgrade to Yosemite, then
2) Upgrade to Aperture 3.6
It took a while, but at least it worked, and it was free. I'm going to assume that they'll never fix the problem in Aperture 3.2.4 now.

Dec 29, 2014 8:28 PM in response to Peter Duttonby Mr Endo,Thanks for your question and self-answer, Peter. I ran into this exact same thing tonight, the first time in the past few weeks that I have tried to use Places. I am also on the versions of Mac OS and Aperture that you were on.
Do you have any idea if the upgrade to Yosemite is necessary? I am still using Aperture on my older MacBook which cannot be upgraded to Yosemite.

Jan 6, 2015 10:53 AM in response to Mr Endoby Peter Dutton,I assume that an upgrade to a later version of Aperture is probably necessary, and that probably means at least upgrading from Snow Leopard. Possibly not all the way to Yosemite, but then again, I don't know if there's an easy way anymore to upgrade to any post-Snow Leopard, pre-Yosemite operating system.
Barring that, the Google Earth script workaround (which I mentioned above) works okay once you get used to it. Good luck.

Jan 15, 2015 5:00 PM in response to Peter Duttonby Mr Endo,Just as an FYI for anyone else who might be in my situation, Mac OS X Lion and the version of Aperture to which you can upgrade (3.4.5) do not work in this case. My guess is that the Google Maps API (Application Programming Interface) just changed, and since we have a version of Aperture that is unaware of such a change, that Google is the culprit instead of Apple. I believe that Aperture 3.5 is the first version to connect with Apple maps instead of Google maps. Unfortunately, now I'm stuck not having native Places support, so I guess I'm going to look into a newer Mac. Whatever application I choose to replace Aperture looks like it will need a newer version of mac OS anyway.

Jan 16, 2015 2:29 AM in response to Mr Endoby Chris Brunnen1,Your guess is very plausible Nathan. Fortunately my machine is upgradeable to Yosemite, although I've only gone as far as Mavericks so for. I also updated Aperture and it is now all working but it wasn't easy. One thing I have learned is your Vault can be converted to a Library by changing the suffix from .apvault to .aplibrary.
I've kept my old laptop on an old system to run my accounts software until I find an alternative for that.
